steering problem

Have an 02 f250 with the 6.8 v10 156xxx miles on the odo. Recently the steering got sloppy. Very sloppy. I replaced balljoints and tie rod ends not quite 2 years ago, checked them all and they are good. I also have a dual stabilizer. A few days ago I noticed a huge difference in turning. I have to spin the wheel almost 3 turns just to complete a turn. I have adjusted the steering gearbox adjustment setscrew (by 1/4 turn at a time with a test ride after each) 1 and 3/4 turn clockwise and after the final ride it actually seems worse than to start. Long story short should I just replace the gear box and be done or am I missing something I should be doing?

Park the truck with the engine running, set the parking brake, lay under it while looking at the pitman arm and steering shaft and have an assistant turn the steering wheel. If the steering shaft and pitman arm movement are out of sync the steering gear is toast.

Adjusting the proload on the steering gear is at best a temporary "fix" but generally leads to accelerated wear. The preload is set in ich-lbs so any adjustment is a big difference. In my opinion anytime you make an adjustment to preload you should be looking into replacing the steering gear.
