Hi people. I have been kicking around an idea on my 2000 expedition. I have had nothing but problems with my 5.4L 2v . So I am going to do a total engine swap or doing a head swap. My truck has150k on it, and has had heads rebuilt 3 times. She still try to sound like a diesel. 3 oil pumps, 4 sets of timing chains kits, all new lower bearings, even had the cylinders laser checked for out of roundness. We found nothing so far. We checked compression that averaged 177 PSI.
So I'm contemplating putting DOHC head's on and get rid of the 2v heads or just junk the 5.4 and change the motor to an 81 460 with Holly EFI direct injection. Any and all advice appreciated. figured I'd pick somebody else's brain who might know better, thanks guys.

Maybe I should ask this a little different. Has anyone ripped out a 5.4L and put in it's place a 1981 460 into a 2000 Expedition? Is there adapter for the Tran's, and what other obstacles would I run into?
The sad part of doing conversions to "new" trucks is the large amount of computers in those trucks.
I would guess there is no adapter for the trans. Beside that the wiring and computers would be the biggest issue.
If I was determined to use that 460 I would use the trans and transfer case that came with that motor so you wouldn't need to use the engine and trans controller from the 2000. Then your wiring issue is just to get the rest of the systems wired as stand alone. You would need to get new driveshafts made.
I am assuming that you have no emissions testing in your area as that would scuttle the whole plan.

Thanks 2trux for the reply. I did contact Scanner Dan for advice on the ECM, he seemed to think that you can shut down most items and trick others to wire it into the ECM. There is a adapter plate for the marriage of the R100 trans to the 460. I'll post the website a little later. I want to keep the trans due to the truck being AWD and will not have to have to customize drive line's, or the mounts for the trans and transfer case. I'll post more information as I come across it. I might have to make a video of the changeover. Thanks, looking forward to other Pro's and cons.
I will have to admit that I am surprised there is an adaptor plate as this can't be to common of a swap.
Good luck on your swap and keep us posted, I would like to see it.
The last big block swap I did was years ago putting a 429 into a 79 Bronco.
