Don't want to derail this thread but......not recommended on a concealed carry. Open carry absolutely. Never volunteer any unnecessary information.
My advice, and it's just advice, don't ever do this in NJ. You, your firearm and your vehicle will part ways in different directions. And when you get out of jail, good luck getting your firearm back.
Don't want to derail this thread but......not recommended on a concealed carry. Open carry absolutely. Never volunteer any unnecessary information. The exception would be if the firearm would come into play lets say if it was in the glove box and you needed to go in there to get to something etc. The other exception would be if the LEO asks if you have any weapons in the vehicle. Always be truthful.
I couldn't disagree with this advice more. I've been a CCW holder for 24 years. The only time an officer when bat **** crazy is when I didn't tell him I was a CCW holder because I didn't have anything in the vehicle at the time. Even with my military uniform on the front seat next to me, he went bonkers for not telling him and chewed me out. The other 4 or 5 times I've been pulled over in those 24 years, LEOs appreciated it when I politely told them, "Before we get started, I need to let you know that I'm a CCW holder and I do (or don't) have a weapon in the vehicle." They each said fine and asked for my info. I've also never received a ticket since being a CCW holder either because they know from the get go, that you have be an extremely law abiding citizen to obtain one of those permits in any state that issues them. As for the states that give CCW holders a hard time, I generally make it a point to avoid those states as much as possible.
In Ohio, gun owners with CCWpermits have a “Duty to Inform” If they're stopped by the police for any reason and fail to “promptly” tell the officer or officers that they're carrying, they face a six-month suspension of their concealed weapon license and a misdemeanor conviction.
The state is softening on this. It used to be a fifth degree felony, not a misdemeanor. They are talking about removing that part of the law all together.
The last time I was pulled over, the first thing I did was inform the LEO I was carrying and where I was carrying and that I had a CCW. Moments later he was informed over his radio that I had a CCW and he let them know that I had told him. This was years ago, I assume this shows up on their laptops now.
Any vehicle registered to you in Ohio will show a CCW permit when the plate is run and you are required to inform LOE's that you have a a CCW. Like the others have said, just know the laws of the state your traveling to or through!!
