Does the transmission shift when you get rolling?

First thing to check would be fluid level/condition.

Curious, what happens when a torque converter "blows up"? Did it dump ATF at the bell housing?

Can you take photos? I've never seen a torque converter blow up. And I've seen many, many failed transmissions. I've seen torque converters fail internally, but I've never seen one come apart.

You probably have a pressure problem or sticky valve body. Either way I'd drop the pan and valve body to make sure check ***** are in the right places. Your front planet may be toast as well. I had the same issue you were describing but instead of fixing it, I went with a manual

That will do it. There is a reason those nuts are torque retaining nuts. It's been proven that regular nuts will back out and cause damage.
