5.4 Engine upgrade?

Hi all, New here. Looking for some quick advise before going into rabbit hole. I am most likely replacing my 5.4L in 2001 F350 XL 4x4. Started looking at a crate engine for about $3G, which I figure is worth it, but if I'm going in that far what are my options for upgrading some performance? My first thought is a Lightning 5.4 crate engine of same series for a few hundred bucks more, then finding the SC and other components necessary. Before I go down that rabbit hole... I thought I'd ask the question: What am I getting into?? Bullet points, or a link to someone that did this already would be great! Outside of the crate engine, am I looking at a few grand or like 10G? Does the trans not bolt up? Has this been tried and is a no go? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Rob.

If you're gonna go for a blower, it might be worth looking into the aftermarket. A 5.4 Lightning engine would bolt up to your tranny, and you'd need a tune to adjust for it. It's not a rubber-stamp upgrade. Interested in what others think.

Thanks Krewat. Also interested in other engine options for this, but not really interested in diesel.
