take it off, soapy water, let it sit a bit then rinse and blow out with some air.

I have had excellent results with soot removal using simple green, this was on exhaust/turbo pieces, not egr though I don’t see any reason it wouldn’t

I haven't found any videos that detail the disassembly of the EGR system to clean it. I've never done this before and would like to do it myself. IF anyone has any links or literature that would aid me it would be must appreciated. Also I've heard that you have to drain a portion of the cooling system, is that true? Or should I just send this to a mechanic.

Some are better than others, you may have to watch several of the avaiable videos and see what helps. All day/night long on youtube.

I watched a video that showed the egr cooler being cleaned with warm soapy water (EGR ****) Also I found that removing the EGR will help keep it clean

Take it off, clean it, put it back on - or - delete it and the DEF and never have to worry about it again. More HP and torque and mpg.
Unless you're in a smog friendly state.

You could buy a brand-new OEM core for $290. That'd be the route I'd take. It'll last a long time for less than $300.
