Even tilting the bottom cushion up doesn't give you enough space to get back there. I ended up using the red metal piece of the Builtright kit to engage the tab and pull the latch that way. Heck the thing is mean to fit into the pin so that was an easy solution. Otherwise you have to use a box wrench like they show you in the video.
I tried with a box wrench but I guess I just wasn't able to hook the pin correctly. That or I wasnt able to disengage the latch. I'll try a double box end the next time, with some cord attached to the upper end so that I can use more force while pulling.
As soon as it warms up a bit here...
I am planning on this mod as well to make access behind the seat. If the truck has the audio equipment behind the seat, is there room to mount a long gun back there. I was thinking of rigging something up to keep a gun there out of sight.
Lifting the seat bottom gave me plenty of room to get back there and disengage the latch, but like others said, there's not really much room back there with the speaker equipment.
May be able to mount a long gun there without the sub, not much room between the seat back and the cab.
I put one on mine and love it. During the winter months I keep extra coats etc. back behind the seat. Also have my towstrap back there as well. Since my truck is the XLT I don't have the subwoofer etc. behind the seat so there is actually quite a bit of room. On my pheasant trip to SD last fall I even put two shotguns in soft cases behind the seat and the fit perfectly.
I'll have to check it out and see what will work. I was thinking of mounting some sort of gun case back there that I can just put the gun in when I want to take it somewhere. It may take some thinking to work around the sub, etc. I haven't actually looked behind the seats to see how much room exists.
I was all set to order this a couple weeks ago - then I went out and tipped the seat forward, and found that space was all full of power amp and woofer. Great idea if you don't have that stuff - and truthfully, should have been built that way to begin with. I really miss the space that was available behind the seats of my 2002 F-250.
You agreed that it's not useful due to the amp & other stuff that's already there, but then say it should have been there to begin with? Why, so you can look once, see the amp and never look again? LOL.
But for those days when I don't want to throw whatever I'm carrying in the bed of the truck, and I don't want it to mess up the nice leather seats, I can now put the seatbacks down and throw it on top of the back of the seats.
Why not simply put the seats UP and put whatever it is you are carrying on the floor?

Because I have the storage box underneath, and I may be using that area for some stereo equipment as well.
In any case, if Ford is going to make the area behind the seat accessible, and go so far as to put a latch with a release back there, then they should at least make it so you can reach the release.
There are other reasons to get back there as well - such as accessing the wiring, small subwoofer, and amp that are behind the seat.
