i seen a really trick idea from an xploder, he has a false floor built where the passengers sit and had them under there. outta site but yet very tricked out. also seen them mounted in the seat or even once on the roof...and even on the side in the cargo area...but id say under the middle or rear seat would be good.
the amp will be fine on the carpet, just secure it so it doesnt move.
Mounting it on the carpet shouldn't be a problem. Pretty much all car audio amps have their cooling fins on the top or the side.
i would recommend mounting under either the front passenger seat, or under one of the row seats. Remember, the longer the run is from the source, the more cable and signal wire you will use, and the greater your chances are for picking up additional noise into the system.
Be sure when mounting under a seat to not bolt the amp to the car. Bolt a piece of wood to the car first then mount the amp to the wood. These newer amps dont generate as much heat as the older ones did and if things got to hot it would shut down as protection. If that starts to happen then U will have to direct cool air to it or block the heater from hitting it.
I mounted the amps in my Suburban in the roof. Used aluminum channel as a framework and hung them from the roof braces. I wanted to leave the passenger area fully usable and wanted to avoid having to worry about stuff hitting the amps (like I would have if I had mounted them in the floor or in the side panels in the cargo area).
Another idea on the Excursion would be in the floor console. I've seen some pretty trick motorized amp racks in consoles.
Other than that, maybe in the backs of the front seats?
Thanks everyone. I ended up putting it under the middle row and it turned out great. I still have full use of all the seats and I can still lay the seat flat if needed. The system sounds great to.
