Hey all,
I am curious what it would take to convert my truck from manual steering to power? On Ebay I found a site that offers all the required refurbished components for a complete convert for 65-74 F100 to F350 2WD for $795. The only thing I question is the need to shorten the steering column as the seller states needing to be done. I was wondering if that's a safe practice to perform on my own or would I need to have a professional shop do that? Anyone out there heard of this before and if so, is it worth doing?
Thanks,
Rob
Thanks for the great information Joe.
I think the biggest problem I'd be faced with is finding a donor truck in the correct years that I could scavenge parts from. I'd also love to install power disc front brakes so a donor would be ideal but not too realistic thus far. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled to see if I can spot one in my travels.
One step at a time.
I converted my 66 with a 352 engine from manual to power steering. It depends on the system you choose. I bought a system off of eBay and paid something like $600.00 or so. Be careful when you order because I did get a Ford steering box, but it came with a GM power steering pump. We got it to fit but it took a lot of spacers and washers to get to align with the pulleys. I also had to have the steering shaft shortened and had to have it tweaked a couple of time to make it work. I'm not 100% happy with it but it is a huge difference from the old manual box that was in the truck. One issue that I have with the Ford steering box is that you pretty much need to drive out of turns. If you let the steering go after the turn, mine will keep turning. It isn't hard to manage but it is a drawback.
One thing to consider though. If you order a Bendix steering system, I am pretty sure you may not have to shorten the steering shaft. The Bendix is about twice as much as the regular Ford steering box. I kinda wished I'd gone that way when I bought the other system. I also heard that with the Bendix system you might need a cooler installed to cool the fluid. Not sure of that though.
Overall, I really like the power steering in my 66. It was a huge bear to manage before I got it changed out.
