Has anyone recently converted their 1973 2WD Ford F100 with Manual Transmission from manual to power steering? If so, can you document the conversion and post all steps and all parts needed. One question I have right now is can I use the same steering column?
A long, long, long time ago I converted a '70 F-250 from manual steering to power steering, it was fairly simple bolt-on conversion. Just use all parts from the same year trucks that came with power steering. You'll need the following:
- Power steering box, with pitman arm
- Steering column, with rag joint (yes the column is different, actually the it's just the shaft that's different, because the manual box is a lot shorter than the power box, so the shaft is longer)
- Power steering pump, with hoses
- Power steering pump brackets, for your specific engine
- Crank and water pump pulleys, for your engine
- Power steering return line cooler, that bolts to the frame
I think that's it. The easiest way is to go to the junk yard find a truck like yours with power steering, and buy everything you need, then you know it will fit for sure. Hope this helps.
