Originally posted by 2Bowers Don't know if this would apply to Theo, but I use XP's program compatibility wizard. It lets me run programs etc. under Win 95 or 98 settings.
I was going to suggest this also. You can go into setup and tell the OS how to act with certain programs - worked for me.
I have used 95 - 98 - 98 SE ME and XP Home. I like the XP best and hated the ME.
I have used ALL of the MS operating systems except W2000 server and NT, this includes all of the DOS versions and many other non MS op systems. The only real good systems from MS were Dos 6.22, W3.11, and XP-Pro. I have not had much experience with W-XP Home edition tho but the little I did use it convinced me it was close to being in the same category as W-ME (worthless). Linux is not a system for novice computer users (yet).
If you don't like XP I would recommend W98SE or W2K. You may have to download drivers for those systems tho.
I too have WinXP and after a first glance the look of the OS looked odd but once I changed it to the classic windows view I felt more at ease and basicly looked as my Win98 looked. But the programs that run in the background was unreal, my Win98 had only 3 running in background WinXP had over 50! after some searching I found 2 sites that really help you manage and speed up the use of your system, check them out if you like.

I signed up with a couple of other sites too, I will post their addresses when I can find 'em... hopefully I will be able to make a transition soon. My desktop, running 98SE has hung 4 times in the last hour..... good old win98.
Yeah, Windows 98 is worthless. Windows 2000 was the OS that was newer from the ground up and since then Windows has been a LOT more stable. I quit building PCs for that simple reason..I got tired of messing with Win98 installations. Good luck getting your computer the way you like it.
i cant stand xp. i find it unstable and very user unfriendly. i also find it slow inm most applications. i dont like it at all but i dont use my pc enough to change the os. im barely home
XP is the simplest, running mainstream hardware all driver support is included very easy to use/run and is stable enough. During the recent power outage my linux box (which has a UPS attached to it good for an hour) lost its 265days uptime, never seen a winblows machien run good with that much uptime...but none the less with at least one reboot a day its good enough.
Thing is you have a dell laptop :P Just bugging theo but I hate dell...not a fan of anything really other then custom built boxes. When it comes to laptops though they are just a pain usually, everything is the manufacturers brand etc; etc; I like the IBM thinkpads the best myself and haven't had any problems with Fujitsu's lifebook.
But for what you have now I'd just deal with XP its going to be better in the longrun (I actually run 2k on my laptops but it can be a pain for driver support etc I just use my laptops for MS OFFICE and a few other small programs for when I am out about or in school.
The only complaint I have about XP is that you can't run dos outside of windows. I liked being able to restart in MS-DOS and mess with files if I had to. It seems like microsoft nowadays is trying to keep users out of their secrets. Even though XP is tons better than previous OS's, it's a lot harder to mess with settings and find files and etc.......
I think what MS is doing is making the systems more idiot proof. That is they are trying to prevent people from accidentally screwing things up, the not allowing people into dos is part of that.
MMToy12, I did the same thing. I hated the bubble look on everything. As for XP I'm still neutral on it but I'm slowly getting used to it. I've been at it since July 4th 03. I just know once I get it down Microsoft will put out some new version "Windows SP Gold" that's SP for super professional.
Don't forget once you get it online set the firewall on your internet gateway, and download the updates.
Here's another page with tips that can help.
Bill the Borg will assimilate me no more!!
I've been off line for more than 2 weeks thanks to upgrading to XP! I may have just debugged it for the first time. I'm not going to be held hostage by these nitwits anymore. My hardware is at the end of its generational lifespan and when the next operating system comes out I will be purchasing a Power Mac G5. Down with "The Evil Empire"

After perusing pages and pages of information gathered from the links here, I learned that indeed the mighty XP is benevolent, and should be worshipped. I learned that I am just a foolish mortal, who cannot alter any of the mighty XP's ways..
On one site, however, I learned about associations.....
Now I run the enhanced Notepad+ on my laptop, and the mighty XP don't realize I'm doing it...
