Has anyone used the PAC AP4 in a XLT with the 8" Sync3 with 7 speaker system. I've read that it will work, and I've also read it will only work with the Sony amp based system. Anybody ???

This PAC interface is for F150`s and SD that have the Premium Sony System which consist of 10 speakers and a sub woofer.
Does the system in your XLT have a sub woofer or is the Sony name on any of your speakers, sub, and factory amp?
No, but according to Crutchfield if you have a XLT with 8" screen and the 7 speaker set up the PAC will work.

Try this instead...
FOR-11CK- NO CUTTING FACTORY HARNESS- for the installation of aftermarket amplifier. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D9W3CHY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ij3wAbVTN986G
It's currently unavailable but you could look elsewhere. Let us know what you end up doing.
Crutchfield can be hit or miss with their info so don`t take it as being the truth.
Not that it helps the OP, but this has been my experience as well.
Crutchfield said that I didn't need an antenna adapter to put a double DIN Pioneer into my Mustang GT. False. Local Best Buy installers told me that I did and pulled one off the rack for me. Install easy after that.
One of the guys on the F150 site who has the 8" screen in an XLT without Sony and with center channel has used the PAC AP4 and it worked. I guess I'll be the Guinea Pig.
