About a month ago i posted about my dealer rebuilding the rear that was apparently deffective. Well I finnaly got my truck back after three and a half weeks and a new scratch in the bedside. The service mang. said he garrenteed that the slop was gone because he drove it himself!! Well i didnt get out of the lot and I new it wasnt any better than when I left it there! They painted the bedside which supprisingly dosent look bad( its the only thing they have done right). They want me too bring it back but I`m very hesitant, I`d like too find out what`s wrong before it goes back too any dealer. Has anyone hear had any slop in drive train?? Maybe transfer case. Its only when you take off slowwly from a stop, drive shaft accually moves about 3/4 of a turn before engaging. HELP

If you get under it with it in Neutral (be careful and apply parking brake), can you actually turn the driveshaft 3/4's of a turn by hand?
It's the green metallic, for '01 - there seems to be a couple different versions of this color in different years.
If you can REALLY turn the driveshaft 3/4's of a turn in neutral (I still don't really believe it), then there is no mechanic I know of that would accept that as normal. You're talking about the REAR driveshaft, yes?
If they even TOUCHED the rear, they may have used the original differential. But that much slap should be obvious to any thumb-fingered dealer mechanic (sorry dealer mechanics).
Find another dealer. Show the mechanic what you see. I just can't believe anyone would allow that ... or, talk to the OWNER of the dealership and explain the situation.
How many miles on this truck ?
The backlash or pinion depth is problably not set right.
You need to find out exactly what they replaced in your rear diff.
Get a list of what they changed out !
Examples:
carrier bearings
pinion bearings
spyder gears
side gears
center locking pin
When you drive it does it make a howling noise at higher speeds?
Yes I would find another dealer or a speciality shop that works on Ford rear diffs

Ain't no way too much backlash is going to give you 3/4's of a turn at the driveshaft!
Any warranty work or even payed work from Ford, they should have given you a receipt that lists parts and labor, even if the net charge is $0.
Originally posted by FortyFords I don't think he means a 3/4 of a turn of the drive shaft ,It could be 3/4 inch or so of play .
We all tend to stretch things a little.
But I hear ya on the list ,sometimes they just give you a rr the rear diff with a code for there ticket
You have to ask for details.
Rich
Well, 3/4 of an inch is still a lot... that would have to be one WAY OUT diff housing.
Anyway...
For me, Ford always listed everything out on the ticket as to what was done, how many hours and individual part #'s for what was used.
I think it's really the only way they can get paid for the work. Then again, my '96 T-bird was the only one I ever had warranty work on. So far, my '97 Cougar 4.6L 30th Anniv and my '01 F250 have not had any reason to go back to the dealer... thank God
no i`m not stretching!! The shaft turns about 3/4 of a turn. I talked to them today and next week they are changing the transfer case. And they are the biggest knuckle heads i`v ever seen. I know for a fact i could turn the wrenches on this truck much better and faster!!! But warrentee work
No way!! The driveshaft is connected to the rear bone.
Seriously the transfer case has nothing to do with how much the drive shaft turns b4 the wheels start to turn. You can pull the shaft out and see the same thing turning the companion flange with your hand. Its a diff problem if we are hearing correctly.
The only thing I know of that can give you that much play is lunched spider gears. My locker isn't that bad..
If you can turn the rear shaft 3/4 of a turn before the rear axles move at all you have broken gears in the rear. That's the only way I can imagine it having that much play.
Hey 99,
Are Detroit's known to have this particular peculiarity? My SD with a Detroit does this exact same thing...although it is only about 1/8 to 3/16's of a turn. Pinion depth appears correct, pinion nut is tight, back lash was .012 when assembled, and the gearset makes no audible noise. I can feel it in the drivetrain when on/off the throttle, any input? Thanks, Tim
