OBD2 data

Does anyone know if there's any way to read the PIDs on older OBD2 equipped trucks? I get the following message from my Torque app:

"ECU problem
The ECU is reporting that it does not support the reading of the PIDs. Your vehicle may not be OBD2 compliant OR the vehicle ECU has not been enabled by your dealer/manufacturer for OBD2 access. Torque will probably not be able to retrieve information due to this problem."

I've enabled the Ford Powerstroke in the app.
Is there a different app that might work?

I get a similar message every time Torque boots up and connects to my '97 but I just click ok (or whatever the message says) and move on.

Does the dongle ever connect to the PCM? There should be several flashing icons in the upper left hand corner of your screen. The one that looks like a USB drive is the dongle, the one that looks like a car is the PCM. When torque connects to the dongle (OBDII Adapter) the USB looking icon stops flashing and goes solid. That's when I generally get this error message. If you click through that error, and let it sit for a few seconds (maybe 10-15 seconds), the car icon goes solid and the gauge on the initial Torque dashboard menu, changed from showing G's to RPM and starts reporting information. That's when I know it's connected and I can start data logging, pulling live data, reading codes, etc.

I only found this out by talking to AutoEnginuity, but I guess anything over 6000 lb was exempt for the OBS years, They recommend selecting the non-OBDII interface setting when connecting to the powerstrokes.

Yes, it was technically exempt, but the 95 and later trucks were equipped with OBDII (ish) data capabilities. I'm using the OBD II port on my '97 F-350 (through Torque Pro) for live data and data logging and it works well. The 94.5 and 95 trucks seem to be a crap shoot, but many of them were OBDII enabled by the dealers that were working on them back in the 90's. If they weren't you can still have the dealership enable OBDII by flashing the PCM to a updated version of software.

Thanks everyone. I do get the Torque Pro app to connect after clicking OK on the pop up screen. All four indicators go solid green. There are six gauges that come up when hitting the Realtime Information button.
1. Rev gauge does show rpm and changes with throttle.
2. Accel gauge appears to work with phone sensors.
3. Throttle gauge does not work.
4. Speed gauge appears to be GPS speed.
5. Boost gauge shows 29.9, which is standard pressure at sea level, and does not change or even compensate for altitude.
6. Coolant gauge does not work.
I don't know if this is normal for a 97 F250. Mine is not stock, I've added more goodies than my signature shows. I do gave a DP Tuner F6 chip installed and have done all checking under my modified stock tune. Can Jody at DP access more PIDs?

What does data logging actually show you? Is that all I should be really concerned with?

Good to see if it is working
2. Accel gauge appears to work with phone sensors.
Don't know about this one
3. Throttle gauge does not work.
Should be able to use #1 above
4. Speed gauge appears to be GPS speed.
Could be used in logging to figure out if a problem occurs at a certain speed

I can't remember if the PCM monitors actual boost
6. Coolant gauge does not work.
PCM does NOT monitor coolant temperature. Use EOT to monitor Engine Oil Temp

You choose a blank space on Torque Pro and add a gauge. The items in green are being used by your truck PCM.

You can add custom pids if you know the number. There is some in the READ FIRST Tech Folders at the top of our Forum page.

Data logging allows you to keep the monitor recording while driving and then you can review the settings to see how the engine is running at certain places or rpms.

I watch IPR%, HPOP pressure, Battery voltage, Engine Oil Temp, Transmission Fluid temp, and Transmission gear.

It sounds like it's working to me!

You need to add custom PIDs in order to have the typical OBS Powerstoke stuff working. There is another thread here somewhere that talks about how to do that. I can look into it more if you like when I'm at home and have my tablet with me. I'm at work now and don't have it in front of me to post the step-by-step.

Get on "the Nation", go to the OBS PSD section, there's a sticky thread on Torque Pro, a gazillion posts with PIDs.

Here's my Torque display setup on a tablet mounted in the truck. I find the MAP guage shows higher than my manual hosed boost guage. I tend to believe the MAP guage. The HP and TORQUE guages work intermittently, showing readings more when your on the throttle. I like the pips that show max readings for later reference. I've had the HP guage hit 550. That was using my extreme tune and getting on it. I did break the tires loose, so the reading probably isn't accurate, but I'd like to think I'm getting that kind of horsepower . I still need to raise the turbo and install my 3" intake manifolds. Than plan to have the truck dinoed for actual horsepower output.

HP and torque aren't actual PCM data; they're probably something calcuated by the app, and probably not very meaningful.

Have you gotten it to read actual PCM data such as EOT, ICP, etc?
