My 2012 F150 3.5 EB has been great but recently, on an intermittent basis, after stopping at a stop sign or traffic light, it will not shift out of 1st gear.
The "fix" has been to either pop it in neutral and back into Drive, or sometimes I have to pop in Neutral, turn engine completely off, then restart and pop into drive.
Today it did this 4 or 5 times.
When it's working correctly, it shifts perfectly. I suspect some type of electrical connection issue - ?
Check out Fordtechmakeuloco on youtube. He points out some potential reasons to change the fluid early. Maybe this could shed some light on potential causes. He is also a member on this forum also. At the very least, this video is a good source for how the 6R80 works. He has many more videos on youtube. Good luck!
Yes there is a filter...well technically a screen I believe.
I would suggest having the dealership flush the fluid and then have them drop the pan and replace the filter.
I just did this and it cost an extra $100 to have them drop the pan. The total was $300.
With either just the flush or just the pan drop it was going to cost $200 and that is well worth it to me not to have to deal with transmission fluid....it is the worst fluid in the vehicle to deal with and I will happily pay others to deal with it.
Erratic shifting on the 6R80 is almost always due to failure of the "molded lead frame" and there have been TSBs and recalls issued on it. You need to get yours replaced.

I'm leaning this way based on what I learned today. I'm hoping to do this myself as there are some really good YouTube vids for this.
There's actually a warranty extension for this issue. I've read the document, which states that repairs are to be done for free, if the relevant codes are present in the PCM.
For some odd reason my truck is not throwing any codes. 2 days ago I experienced the symptoms (will not shift up to 2nd gear from 1st) about 5 times during the drive home from work, yet no codes when I checked yesterday.

X2
When my 2014 had lead frame issues it would drop from 4th gear to 1st gear locking up the rear wheels. I'd have to put it in neutral and pull over, put it in park, shut the truck off, pull the key out and restart.
If I didn't go through all of those steps it wouldn't shift out of 1st gear.

Just out of curiosity, how many miles are on the truck?
I think the lead frame is your most likely culprit. The only way your transmission filter is clogged is if your transmission is already in the process of failing.
I replaced the Leadframe myself on Sunday, as well as a couple other low-dollar parts (filter, connector sleeve, internal connector, gasket).
So far all is working. Since my symptoms were intermittent, time will tell if the problem is "fixed". I romped on it pretty good on Sunday without a hitch.
It was not a difficult job to do. Took some time, but not rocket science.
