Hello all,
Can someone here please help me understand the tow package prep. I am in the process of purchasing a used F450 and I can't figure out what exactly the "tow prep package means" and if I need to get a truck that has it factory installed. I am going to be hauling a fifth wheel. Is this something that can be added after the fact or do I need it to have come factory installed?
The Ford prep consists of 4 pucks (that allow mounting a compatible 5th wheel hitch) and another hole in the center (to allow inserting a goose neck ball). It is a great set-up and can be installed after the truck is built. OEM is Reese.

Thank you for responding! If I have it added afterwards, will it be the same? Is there any disadvantage to adding after?

It will be identical to factory installed if added after.
Only advantage of factory installed is less costly and installation hassle. BTW, a competent shop experienced in trailer hitches can easily handle the install.

Ok got it. I was confused because I had a read an article that was saying something about a tow packages having larger brakes and radiator cooling lines and all this other extra stuff, that confused me. Thanks for clarifying!

This is absolutely true in SUVs and 1/2 tons. The tow package will usually throw a lower gear set and another tranny cooler in or something.
Not do much on a Super duty.
I added the pucks afterwards - about $600 for parts from the dealer and $500 for the install. Order it from the factory and it's cheaper.
Ok, call me dumb, but on my F350 the "pucks", plate and in-bed plug was labelled "Fifth-wheel prep". However, for the life of me, I dont know what else it could mean, as every F450 is setup for towing.
It might help if you could provide the year or the F450 you are looking at.
