Great thread. For what engines would this fix be applicable? I have a 1990 F-350 w/ 7.5 efi
The 460 has a different intake setup than the other engines, and I don't have any pictures handy, so I'm not sure if this is applicable to you. Basically, if your PCV valve feets into a specific intake runner rather than into a central port on the intake you'll want to do some type of mod.
There is a Ford TSB on this subject. I think I found it elsewhere on this site.
The Ford proposed fix is to plug PCV takeoff near the #8 runner and to drill and tap the center of the manifold. Then a new PCV port is screwed into the new hole. This basically retrofits the design to the current production version, albeit probably with more work and expense than just a tee to an existing vacuum line.
Ford probably didn't take the route of "tee'ing" an existing vaccuum line due to wories about the PCV flow potentially clogging and interfering with other vaccuum operated systems. But anyone reading this forum should be capable of checking for this potential condition every other oil change or so.
Ford must have changed something in the '94 F150's too because my truck's PCV valve doesn't hook up to the rear of the upper intake. Referring to bigric's photo, my vacuum tree is located one runner toward the rear of the engine from where his is and my PCV valve is hooked to it's own fitting located where his vacuum tree is. Anyone else's look like mine?
Mine now looks exacty like this pic. I had been dreading doing this mod because I wasn't sure where to re-route the vac line, and whether I'd do it correctly, etc. I did it yesterday, and it took 15min. Heck, I even had a spare 3/8" cap to put on the old vac fitting on the back of the intake!
Thanks for the pic bigric, and for the info fellas!!
I have a 95 F150 with a 302 and automatic. I've heard that disconnecting the pcv valve and connecting it to the vacuum tree on the plenum will increase the life of the engine and could make the truck run better. Anyone else heard this too?? If so, does it actually do any good or will it cause harm??
Thanks
To those who have performed this mod. Did the mod help reduce pinging under load or does this not make sense?. I was thinking the number 8 cylinder could ignite before it's supposed to becuase of the extra vapours getting sucked in there under load. If the vapours are evenly distributed from the main vac tree as per this mod this shouldn't happen is my take on it.
Hi there,
I have a 95 F150 w/5.0 in it with auto trans.
It runs smooth and has pwr but it burns oil.
There is no blow-by, does not leak, however, ther is oil in the upper intake and egr valve. I also noticed oil in the back of the engin on the firewall. not alot. It smokes blue when you first start it up and then goes away while driveing. Is it the pcv system. I can't find the valve on this engine. Do you think that is where the oil on the firewall is comming from? Thanks
well i just preformed this mod and luckily i had the plenum tree with an extra vacuum connection on it thanks on the mod i already lost an engine due to lack of compression in #8 cylinder hopefully this keeps her running the idle smoothed out but when i rev it and let go the engine kinda goes vvvvrrroooooommmm pop pop that has nothing to do with the mod rite just my exhaust leak?
