Looking to see if anyone has seen this and knows what it is. It started leaving the kids school yesterday. A hard turn right felt like the steering locked and wouldnt turn. A hard pull got it going. This morning when rocking the steering wheel I have a knocking sound when changing directions.
Youtube video is clear on the sound and the wheel actually jerks or pops a little. It pops when you start turning it the opposite direction (short left and right rocking on the steering wheel).
Could be any of the parts under there. You just have to get it up and start inspecting each part. You can narrow it down by getting down there and listening while someone else turns the wheel back and forth.
I just jacked it up. There is a good amount of play when rocking the wheel back and forth holding at 9 and 3 and no play at 12 and 6. Thinking maybe tie rod.
Sounds about right. Fortunately it's one of the less expensive and easier parts to change. If there's grease fitting you could fill it up and wait for a warmer day to change it.
Was a balmy 70 here today. Replaced both inner and outer tie rods on both sides. Both had some play. Had NTB do an alignment this afternoon and all is back to good.
