7.3 PS Powertrain

I am resto-moding a scout ll with a 7.3 power stroke and need to know exactly what transfer case I need. I will have a ZF S6-650 tranny. Also, any tips since this is my first time doing anything like this.

You will need a transfer case that was used behind the ZF6 from a Superduty, as the output shaft is larger than the output shaft on the ZF5s or the old T18s. I believe the Superdutys used a NP 281, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

You picked a doozy of a swap. The 7.3 is a heavy motor to drop in a scout. Aren’t they passenger drop axles? A transfer case may be tough to find. I think most of the ones that bolt up to that tranny will be driver drop.
Make sure you have a good donor truck as you will need all of the electronics out of it, including the dash.
Are you dead set on the 7.3? There are other diesels which would be easier to swap in. If you decide to do it make sure you post your progress. We love good builds!

4BT Cummins would suit the Scout better, more so if its mechanical injection.

The IH SV series engines are pretty heavy, 345" is about 700lbs. They are industrial/medium duty engines. Not light duty stuff from the big three of that era. Check out the skirt length and size of pistons/rods. Power is flat and will run all day at 3000rpm...Just not a ton of horsepower as the heads are poor.

I have worked on a '76 SII for years. Not an expert by any means, just normal stuff.

Ours has D44s factory. Dana 20 case. Auto hubs. 345 V8. 727 trans. Neat vehicle! Down because of carb issues. :/

I would love to see a build thread if you have one!
