Alternate rims?

With the demise of 14" tires has anyone switched to 15' or 16' and if so what rims and tires did you go with?

There used to be a sticky on it but you can use Explorer or Ranger 15" rims.

I got a set of Explorer 15x7 wheels and mounted 215/65/15 tires. Work quite well, with no interference issues. I can't remember the years but here are a couple of pics:

yes 15x7 5x4.5bolt center 4.5 backset... I just ordered new rims for mine because I have a bent wheel. And the current modular chrome wheels are a little rusty anyways. so new ones are on the way. They look and work great.

My hunch is 2005 and newer mustang wheels will need spacers.

Actually, wheels from all Mustangs will have incorrect offsets, and therefore will need spacers, if you want to install them onto the Aerostar.

There are plenty of Explorers and Rangers in the salvage yards that you can salvage from, and they will fit much better without needing spacers.

Guys, thanks for the quick replies. The only other thing I can say is I wish I could go buy a new Aerostar, probably one of the best if not the best vehicles I've ever owned.

I have new wheels showing up this week, I discovered I had a slightly bent one. I will be posting a pic as soon as I get them done.

This chart should tell everything you need to know

http://www.roadkillcustoms.com/hot-rods-rat-rods/Wheel-Bolt-Pattern-Cross-Reference-Database.asp?LugCount=5&StudSpreadInch=4.5&StudSpr eadMM=#axzz4ykfOSh9U

Match up the stud spacing, hub center hole size, and off set from the Aerostar and you will find that lots of Ford wheels will fit correctly. Rangers and Explorer wheels look like the best bet, as long as you use the ones that were available in 15 or 16 inch diameters. Some Jeep wheels will fit, but they usually need spacers and hub"adapter rings" since Jeeps have a different size center hub hole (which is how the wheel gets centered on the hub). l plan on buying "refurbished/repainted" silver steel wheels from an Explorer or Ranger from Ebay unless I Change my mind and spend more money for alloys. I was at the wrecking yard today, and there were probably 25 sets of alloy Ranger and Explorer wheels that are compatible for cheap.

The 7" wheel from a mid-90's Explorer has approximately the same backspacing as the Aerostar wheel, so it will not rub anything on the inside. Being 1" wider, the added width will all end up toward the outside, bringing the tire that much closer to the fender lip. But it won't touch except in the most extreme turn and bump combinations.

The Explorer wheel will have a bigger hole in the hub than the Aerostar, so location will all be done by the lug nuts. I've been running that way for a couple of years, and have not had any run-outs.

What I was concerned with was that the alloy wheels have a thicker hub plate than the stock steel, so now the lug nuts don't thread as deeply into the hub as with the thinner hub plate on the steel wheels. Again, there have been no problems, so I haven't felt the need to replace the stock studs with longer studs for more thread engagement with the nuts.

I am running slicer Explorer rims as well, for over 10 years and no issues at all. The best decision I made.
