Last summer I had two times where the gear didn't slide out to grab the flywheel, happens wasn't too worried about then. Bring forward to the last couple of months, it was pointed out when my truck starts it has a zing sound to it. Basically sounds like the gear is now sticking so it will not retract as fast and gets over spun. Looking at a few different diagrams this morning I am curious if I can clean/lub the end splines/gear. Anyone pull a starter apart or just replace?
I have removed and replaced plenty of these starters but have not rebuilt one. Removing the starter can be a royal PITA if you have never done it before.
All you should have to do is remove the casing bolts and remove the gear housing. Some starters the housing is also pressed on. Clean and reassemble. It would have to be seriously gummed up for this to be the problem. I recommend replacing it.
