57 degrees at 2000' elevation in foothills outside of Sacramento this AM. Unseasonably warm and very dry compared to last winter. Weatherman says were in for a drizzle of rain next day or so and a slight drop in temps.
Birdbath outside our master bedroom slider (cat entertainment) hasn't frozen once this season...
Tahoe ski resorts are hurting -- only man-made snow, so very limited runs and customers...
Guess I better go outside and exercise (don't you HATE those New Years resolutions??!)...
It was 4°f this morning and now it's warmed up to 28° for our snow that should start any minute, looking at RADAR. Off of work tomorrow. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. Quite a few people around here had frozen pipes. One weird one was a co-workers kitchen HOT water pipe froze yet the COLD water line right next to it did not. They were in a crawl space. Lucky for him they are PEX so he had no split pipes.
Yep, you're on the cusp. Got the Gravely with its blower set up in case, but hope it stays cold enough to just use the leaf blower.
Leslie my wife took at tumble today in a parking lot just before coming home after picking up food. Hit the pavement with her wrists, left knee and shoulder, and the left side of her face, breaking her glasses. First aid was talking to her about going to the hospital but she said she was OK. We'll see in the AM.
Jack, you had me cringe describing her fall. I hope she shook it off and is still feeling fine by morning. Someone has to get out there and shovel tomorrow (j/k).
The last snow I used a blower For the first time and it worked unexpectedly awesome since the concrete and ground was freezing cold and it was a powder snow. This time I dont think it will work as well.
My underground pipe to the dry well froze. First time in 12 years of owning the house. Wouldn't you know it the water softener decided to pruge. I've got some mess to clean up.
The more she talked about it the more I cringed. She'll probably have a black eye the way it's swollen, and she had an ice pack on her cutting hand wrist. She broke that one maybe 20 years ago. As a hairdresser, that's devastating. What really made me cringe was when she finally showed me her glasses and how the left lens was scratched and chipped. She's older but healthier bod wise so hoping. My mother broke her hip the same type of fall in the Barnegat A&P lot.
Snow a few days ago I easily used the leaf blower .... I'm hoping. I have a dentist appointment tomorrow at noon and they called today and it's on no matter what.
Bill, sorry to hear that. I've been watching the ground temps and they are way cold for us. I need to order Fios so I should see it in March. Maybe a dozen years ago or so the city water pipe down at the farm house froze and broke. I laid more soil over that area but I probably should have shut off the water at the street while I was there today picking up the generator. Les was worried about lines down and the heat off.
When Fios was laid down in our area years ago the contractor hit every thing underground - sewer pipes, natural gas, and the electric lines. We had two transformer boxes get popped. Started having sewer backup issues here at the house and got the line scoped, and there was a Fios orange line right through it. So we're fixed, but the point of the story is when the ground freezes you can see what neighbor still has a ruptured sewer pipe because the curb builds up with ice.
I built a bond fire where the ice was. Let the fire burn down and dug there. Pipe was broken. Got some salt and dumped on it, all the while poking it into the pipe. Started running after about 3 hours.
Jack: sorry to hear about Leslie's fall -- those head hits always worry me, maybe she should go see the Doc? Especially if she were to be on blood thinners...
My wife found some boots with these pop out cleats on Amazon (you flip over the cleat part when needed), just for some traction on ice, here is a link (maybe a late Xmas present?):
