Here's a poor quality photo but you get the idea. You can see the spare tire and then adjacent is the plug. The harness with the uncut zip tie is the Magnum one (can't believe I didn't cut it) and then it's plugged into the OEM harness. The other end of the Magnum is up higher.
I turned the big lights around and stopped the whistling, had to be fins as Noreasterma suggested. I removed the round lights I had on the rack and installed them under the rear bumper using the existing bolts there. I attached them to the backup lights, I think it will work out well. A friend had told me that his rear facing rack mounted lights were ineffective during heavy snow. He installed some bumper mounted lights.
Once I installed the new harness, no more phantom trailer. Truck does not think there is a trailer connected. This is because the truck looks at the harness going to the 7-way/4-way plug and if it sees current being drawn, it assumes a trailer. The Magnum harness has those two giant flat connectors and it plugs in line with the tail light harness, which is located up inside the trailer hitch. This has nothing to do with the truck's trailer wiring, so it has no idea that there is a minor amount of additional current being pulled through. The hyper flash issue is independent of the trailer issue - though it's interesting because I noticed that when I had the old harness plugged in line with the 7-way, but disconnected it at the rack end I got a hyper flash. Bottom line - I would feel good about the harness solving your problem, it is no different than splicing into the tail light, except that you aren't cutting anything. I'll be happy to provide any additional info or help!
having the same issue on my 2017 f250. Installer wired to the trailer plug giving the same issue. So if I tell them to wire to the brake light it will fix it? Do I need to run to separate brake lights to split the load or run both to the same brake light is ok?
