I broke off a wheel stud on the left rear tire!!! DOH!! I wasn't using an impact either, it was with the stock tire iron!! Sheesh!! I guess you can call me Lenny (a-la Mice and Men), I don't know my own strength...
Will driving around with one lug broken cause any problems?? I drove it around the block and eveything was ok, but I'd like to be sure before I start driving it more. My thinking says that I've got 7 other lugs holding the tire on, and I'm running the truck unloaded, so it'll be ok, but it'll have to be fixed soon.
Also, will I have to pull the whole axle shaft to replace the stud? I tried searching through my factory manual on CD but kept going in circles not finding anything.
Specified torque is 150 ft. lb's on those studs. I can BARELY get my torque wrench to even "click" at that setting. Were you standing on that lug wrench
You probably won't notice it driving empty. These are hubcentric wheels. I really don't know anything about continous driving with a broken stud, except you're too strong
Ahh good point about them being hubcentric, I totally forgot about that!! That eases my mind a whole bunch cause the axle is supporting the weight of the truck, and the lugs are just clamping the tire to it...right? I did finally find a section on the wheel studs on the factory manual CD. I'm not going to have to pull the whole axle shaft, but I've got to remove a bunch of parts to replace one stud. I still can't believe I snapped a stud! I think I should change my name to Hulk!
Maybe the last guy used a impact on it. Did you get recent new tires or a brake job? Anyway, an F250 has 8 lugs. Three points equal a plane. I'm not saying that I recommend using just 3 lugs. One missing out of seven is not a problem. I've been with a friend that lost 3 lugs out of six while we were wheeling. He just bought some aluminum wheels and didn't re-torque them. I just popped one out from the other wheel to get us four on that side.
Hmm, I just got new tires two weeks ago, and my truck had been at the dealership trying to track down a vibration in the driveline...so it's going to be hard to 'place the blame' on who (or what) did it.
