Would I have any problems driving with one lug nut missing from one of my rear wheels (on a '97 F-250)? I just had new tires mounted, and one of the studs was chewed up, but the tire shop said they couldn't fix it until next week. The owner of the shop told me I should be fine until then (he actually said I could drive forever on it), but I wanted a second opinion.
I'm planning on about 250 miles of mostly highway driving, plus about 40 miles on a pretty well-maintained dirt road over the weekend. Will I be ok with only 7 lug nuts holding one of my wheels on?
If the stud was already "chewed up", then you've probably been driving on 7 good studs for a while now. So what's a few more days? Plus I believe these wheels are "hub centric" which means most of th load is on the hub and the lug nuts just keep the wheel in place. But it really should be fixed ASAP to be on the safe side.
For what it's worth, I drove 45 miles on rougher dirt roads that I'd expected, and about 60 miles on the pavement without any problems. But that all ended when my engine lost some power and had a serious vibration start up while doing 70 MPH on the freeway. The truck's now sitting at the Ford stealership in Orem, Utah, awating a mechanic to look at it and tell me what the damage is (what's worse, a head gasket, or timing chain/belt?). I'm a fair Subaru mechanic, but I've only owned my Power Stroke for two months, so I have no idea what could have happened.
Triton_2002, thanks for your post--I hadn't considered it, but if that stud was already stripped (which by the amount of rust on it, I'd say it certainly was), I was already running on seven good lug nuts.
