2004 Expedition 5.4 4x4 Not working at all.

Hello all first time poster.
No switching noises,no flashing lights..
I have seen the lights flash a couple times after start once or twice before. But it no longer does this .

I changed the transfer case shift motor after reading that this might be the issue.. With no change with the problem.

All the the fuses are fine. Nothing blown.

Anything i I should check or test next?

Thanks for all the help in advanced!

If fuses 11, 20 and 115 are good then you just might have a bad dash switch or 4WD module. The 4WD module is located behind the pillar between the driver's and passenger door on the left side of the vehicle and has two 17-pin connectors.

Thanks for the reply Alloro. Ive double checked the fuses. they are good.

Ive called the dealer and they want $375 for the module and it had to be ordered. Can i get a used junk yard module?

And is there a way to put the truck into 4x4 by jumping the pins untill the module is changed? (spinning wheels in a truck in 3 inches of snow is embarrassing)
im guessing if i put power to the pin that would change it into 4h it would switch it and leave it there once the switch is made.

I don't know of a way to force it into 4WD without the module. I would think if you bought a used one it will work just fine as long as the part numbers match. Check Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market or eBay for used ones.

Example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/03-06-Exped...19.m1438.l2649

For the car-parts website for the part select "Computer Box Not Engine" then "Transfer Case, (LH B pillar)."

Thanks again! I use carpart all the time but for the life of me couldn’t find that part in the menu. Thanks for the walk through. There’s a bunch near me for cheap.. I will have to try after the holiday! I’ll let you know how it turns out.. Happy new year!!

It's more likely because you've disconnected the battery and reset something. The terminals don't require periotic cleaning if done right the first time.

You Sir are probably right... I only use 4x4 maybe twice a year.. And everytime I disconnect the battery, it always has some corrosion around the terminals.. maybe not alot but enough to clean it. And the 4x4 works like charm..

Get a tube of Noalox made by Ideal and coat the battery posts with it before slipping the terminals on, then lightly smear it around on the terminals too. You will never see corrosion on the terminals again.

You can use dielectric grease as well, I used Motorcraft dielectric grease on my battery posts simply because I had it laying around, no corrosion to see anywhere and works perfectly.

If he doesn’t have to clean them again his 4WD will never work.

Yes the DG will prevent corrosion but it is not electrically conductive. The Noalox is imbedded with zinc making it a conductive compound, thus making a better electrical connection. But hey, whatever works for everybody.

Easier to find and pull the fuse for the 4WD module.

Not being electrically conductive is good IMHO. It will not impair the connection, but keeps moisture out. I use it in connectors exposed to the elements as well with great success, as long as there's good metallic contact between the connecting pins in the connector, DG doesn't hurt the conductivity where it matters.
