I have a 2005 V6 Escape that started stuttering the other day. I managed to get it in the shop and hooked/teed up a pressure gauge just before the fuel rail. I also replaced the filter right away as well. The pressure goes to 55 when the key is turned on but not started. I also hear a clunk in the tank when the key is on.
The pressure goes all over the board but steadily down to 10 psi when I hold the throttle at around 2000 psi and then starts to cough and sputter.
I then replaced the fuel pump and had the exact same symptoms.
Does anyone have any have any suggestions what I should look at next?
Use your scan tool to monitor the FRP PID (Fuel Rail Pressure). Compare it to the mechanical gauge reading. The PID should track about 7 psi higher than the mechanical gauge.
Check for leak-down with the mechanical gauge after the key is switched off. This era of Escape was known for injector/PCM problems that require expensive repairs.
