6.2L hours vs mileage recommendations. Need advice.
I'm looking to step up from my 2002 f150 to camp with the kids.
I found a fleet vehicle used in immaculate shape for a hell of a price. Turns out it was a border patrol truck in Arkansas with the camper shell and rollout toolbox/kennel. It has extensive service records according to Carfax at the same dealer with oil changes reported at 5000 mile intervals.
here is the question. It has 93,000 miles BUT the engine hours are 7796 and idle hours are 5684.
ive read everything on here I could find about 6.2 and hours on the engine. The price is a damn good price for a crew cab 4wd.
Would y'all be scared off by the engine hours? Looking to go buy two days from now.
Thank you very much for any advice. I'll take it.
For the non-idle hours, it comes out to an average of 44 mph. Not bad.
Had all the hours been at that speed, the truck would be at 315,000 miles. That is why the truck looks great, it was just sitting there being warm and happy.
Oil change every 5,000 miles... Had it been driven at 44mph instead of idling, that works out to an oil change every 18,000 miles.
I'm a little concerned about the engine as a result, but the rest of the truck should be fine. Can you get a compression check (or full dealer inspection) before buying it?
I'm not scared off by it, but some caution is advisable. The "great" price might be appropriate and fair. Or high...
I have been in South Texas for the past 2 winters.. I see the border patrol all the time...
idle for Hours... and hours.. then do 90 mph to get to next place and idle for hours again.
the main issue.. 5,000 mile oil changes and how many hundreds of IDLE hours not counted into that oil change.
my fleet/lease truck 2 years ago when I purchased it
136,000 miles at 4,100 hours
idle hours of 600....
my question. is the Price so good you could replace the engine with a New one and come out OK...
look up Flatbed Ed.. here on this forum... his 6.2L failed at 418,000 miles .. but had little time at idle.. aka engine failure was camshaft... most overworked part in an engine.
there is also a thread on idle hours that is converted into road miles .. by Ford...

I decided to pass on it with some many hours idling. The salesman said he has a second being processed with the same setup. 63000 miles. 2100 idle hours. When its ready I'm going to go take a look at that one instead.
Thanks a lot for the recs. I'll update with what I find.
