SYNC update

Looking to update 2.2 to 2.3. I thought this could be done with a 2 GB storage device. Now here's what Ford's website says:

You will need a USB storage drive to transfer the software update files from your computer to your vehicle.
Make sure the USB storage drive:
is empty
can hold at least 32 GB of data
is not password protected
is formatted exFAT What's this?

32 GB now? I've got some old USB drives laying around so that's no problem. Just seems like a big jump.
And clicking the link to download the update tells me that "this service is temporarily unavailable".

exFAT is a file system.....if you have a windows computer, insert the drive, go to My Computer and right click on the drive. You should have an option to Format. Select exFAT, and continue.

I looked at upgrading, but I didn't really see a compelling reason to do so. Mine is 2.2, and it works fine......I'll upgrade after 3.0 comes out.

Re: SYNC update

I updated mine with a USB drive it worked flawlessly. I think the 32Gb size is for the file to upack and move files around while updating the trucks system. The eX-FAT is the "extended file allocation table" format that Microsoft came out with several years ago for USB drives. Your Windows computer should recognize the USB drive and format it with that option.

Hope this helps.

That's not the issue. I've got a Mac but I can format the storage device easily with Disc Utility to exFAT. That's been done.
The problem is getting the download from Ford's website.
I had the entire update folder loaded onto a 2GB flash drive last week. I was advised to do it that way and not to load the individual files onto the drive. But when I plugged it into the truck's USB port today not a thing happened.

Two things: 1) It takes about 5 to 10 minutes before any notification appears on the center screen, and; 2) It may not work since you're device is too small.

I wonder if it'll appear if I plug it in and drive off? I've got to make a trip to town later.
Way too cold here to sit in a non running truck in the garage today.

"Non running truck"? That won't work either as you have to have the truck running to do the update, at least according to the instructions...

I had mine in the garage, on home wifi and had it scan for updates. After a couple minutes it just returned with the last check date - no update done.

Gotta' use the thumb-drive for this update.

I thought maybe just sitting there with the key in the ON position might work like it does for FORScan updates or programming remote start modules/fobs. Now it's a project for another day. Drove the truck several miles with the drive plugged in (I fished the update out of the trash from last week and copied it to a USB drive). Nothing happened.
So I'm supposed to plug this thing in, let the truck sit and idle until something happens? Maybe 10 or 15 minutes according to some?
There still is no downloading of a fresh update from Ford's site. No idea what's going on there. An over the air update says that 2.2 is the most recent so nothing happens there either.

Did you ever load the files to a larger thumb drive? Ya' gotta' follow the directions verbatim.

Sure did. Actually a 320 GB USB drive that that used to be a backup for a desktop computer.
I wiped it and reformatted before loading the update. I was advised to just drag the whole folder with the update information and not each individual file to the drive. Looking at the video from Ford, this may be the issue. It says to unzip the downloaded file and copy the files to the USB drive. I gave that a shot. Navigation is off. Key on. It sat for 40 minutes. Nothing.
Ford's video says that it can be done while driving or up to 30 minutes after the vehicle has been turned off. None of that has worked either. Nothing is easy with this.
When I hit the Request Download button I'm told that it's preparing an update for my vehicle and will email me with a link when it's ready. When I click OK, another message appears, saying "system is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later or contact us". This has been going on for a few days.

"Key on." Are you saying the engine was running or that the ignition key was in the "On" position and the engine had not been started? Engine is supposed to be running. I gotta' admit you must be having a very frustrating time with this.

Sure am. From what I've read there are no noticeable changes with the update anyway.
It's below zero here at the moment so I might give it another shot and let the truck run before I head out on errands. That should give proper time.
But Ford's website said that it can be done while driving and up to 30 minutes after turning the truck off. So it just seems odd to me that the truck should sit and idle 30-40 minutes to accomplish this update. I made one trip yesterday where the truck was driven for at least 30 minutes. No update.
It's got to be something simple that I'm overlooking.
