Hey guys, I've got an 03, 7.3 4x4 extended cab. It has 144k miles on it. I've got multiple symptoms going on. First of yesterday while going into work (it was -4 out) The speedo went to 0mph (while driving) to 74mph, then after about 15 minutes it started working again. Then today it did the same, but hasn't started working. So I get under the truck, figuring a loose wire, and there is antifreeze everywhere (tested it a month ago, it tested fine) So I check the rest of the fluids, and it's low on transmission fluid (filled it) and the oil (it was fine EXCEPT) I changed the oil on it like 2 weeks ago, and it looks brand new (not black at all, straight out of the bottle clean) Is my oil pump shelled out? is there any connection of the speedo and the antifreeze? Am I totally screwed?
Where is your antifreeze coming from? That would be my first thing to figure out. If it sprayed into an electrical component it can cause a host of strange issues like you are having. I would guess that it is incidental that transmission fluid is low and it probably was low before this. I don't see how there would be any connection between speedo and antifreeze. If it still runs and drives down the road I would not say you were totally screwed yet!!
BTW the tranny temp gauge does work, as does the oil pressure guage and the cruize control works. I've got no check engine lights. The antifreeze is dripping at the main seal between the engine and tranny, but its wet us the passenger side from somewhere up higher.
What engine do you have? On the 7.3 when you get a cold snap the oil cooler is notorious for losing the seals and springing a massive leak but of course that is over on the drivers side. Nvm I see that you also have the 7.3. Is your heater core fitting situation good? They get old and brittle and snap off or break and can leak around there.
The connections to heater core are at the firewall but in the engine compartment. Have seen them cause similar symptoms to yours. If the leak was inside you would have at least the smell and/or a visible leak inside.
