Yesterday me and a couple buds were mudding and while turning around my front tires got wedged In a very awkward angle making it to where my back wheels couldn't get grip to back up in 2wd, so I got out, locked the hubs, put the 4x4 lever into 4L and put it in reverse. The 1976 4 wheel drive was working perfectly. But my wheels were at so much of an angle that there was way to much pressure built up in the pump and it shed 1 of it's 4 hoses. They are 1976 hoses and very flimsy by now, they all need to be replaced eventually. I know ford was changing the way the power steering operated a lot in those few years after, and 76 was the first year for power steering on this truck I believe? My question is who makes or sells a hose for it? Theres 4 hoses and the one that busted was the Front outside ( meaning further from the Frame ) hose. Wouldn't mind upgrading a bit either if their are some stronger aftermarket hoses for it.
( and yes I washed the engine bay and frame for about an hour and a half where the power steering fluid sprayed. ) Its a 1976 F250 4x4 btw, also known as a Highboy. Will post pics later. Thanks all!
Your truck should have the Bendix power assist steering unless someone swapped in a Garrison setup somewhere along the way (you never know with these old trucks). I just replaced all my hoses on my 77 early this year, though I don't remember where I got the hoses from. I believe I got them from O'Reilly's, but could have been Rock Auto. Either way, the hoses seem to be fairly good quality, though I ran into fitment issues since I've got a 460 and wasn't able to use the return line. The bends in the hard sections weren't the most accurate and the hoses to the ram didn't come with a way to mount them to the factory location, but some ingenuity and strategically spaced zip ties get everything where they need to be. I do remember there was some guess work when ordering the lines since the product descriptions aren't the most accurate, so you might want to go into the parts store instead of ordering online.
Just replaced all of my steering hoses and components over the past year... The hose you describe front outside will be the pressure hose, it comes from the pump and is the larger of the two hoses coming from the pump.... You can get all 4 hoses from many auto sites, I got mine from rockauto.
I actually had my pressure hose built at a local hose shop, the other 3 I got from rockauto. Be prepared to match up different fitting sizes, some will match what you have at the valve and some will not

Thats the pressure hose I described and listed parts for, but you should have the Bendix... zoom out on that shot u took and put up a pic of the whole valve and we can confirm....
That's the Bendix valve. It looks like you're a bit luckier than I was with where in the line yours blew. My pressure line blew in a spot where it sprayed fluid straight at the exhaust manifold. Luckily I had just started it up and was driving down the driveway, otherwise it probably would have been on fire.
Use AN hose. if you get PTFE AN hose, its rated at 2,000 psi and has a stainless mesh exterior gaurd. its flexible and incredibly durable, and you can make your hoses at home. All you need is the correct fittings on each end- for example if its a 5/16 metal line it will have a 1/2" inverted flare fitting, so you get a 1/2" inverted flare to 6an fitting, then your line attaches to that. I've plumbed in many power steering, fuel and other systems with this and it works GREAT. the fittings and hose are reusable too.
As suspected, you have the Bendix setup, which is all I really know about Looks like you took off the cracked hose (pressure) and the hose directly behind it (low pressure return hose). The hoses on the right side of the valve (if your sitting in the truck) are your valve to cylinder hoses. Here are the aftermarket part #'s as Ive never seen an oem ford hose...

Document what hose is coming from what place to what place ! Sounds simple until you re-assemble ... The 77 parts diagram and 76 diagram have the cylinder hoses flip flopped.... your truck will go front right valve to front cylinder hole and back right valve to back cylinder..... I was having fits figuring that out.... until I put 2 and 2 together on some old pics i took...
If your considering having the steering components rebuilt or giving it a shot yourself, say so and we can give ya some suggestions with that adventure...

Garrison Power Assist P/S: 1973 F250 4WD; 1974 F250 4WD before serial number T80,001.
Bendix Power Assist P/S: 1974 F250 4WD from serial number T80,001; 1975/76 F250 4WD; 1977 F250 4WD before serial number Y20,001.
The Garrison P/S control valve is completely different than the Bendix. Both are shown at the bottom of the pic.
With Power Assist, there are FOUR P/S hoses (see pic below):
Two long P/S hoses, pressure (3A719) and return (3A713), route from the pump (3A674) to the control valve (3A730).
Two short P/S hoses, pressure (3A714) and return (3A717), route from the control valve to the hydraulic cylinder (3A540).
