P012f CEL

Looking for some opinions here.
Went out of town for a this week, wife was taking the 2017 6.7 to work for a few days.
Immediately called me and said the check engine light was on. Seemed to run ok, no problems other than the light.

Got home today and found that it had a code of P012f which is apparently a discrepancy between the coolant temp and the oil temp.
It then occurred to me that before I left that morning I remembered that I forgot to plug the truck in that night and it was pretty chilly out. I plugged it in and left.
It only had a chance to heat for a few hours before she left.
I reasoned that it was possible that the light came on because the water had heated to a certain temp and the oil had not.
Cleared the code and it has stayed off.

Anyone had this happen?
If I leave it plugged in overnight will it eventually heat the oil ?
Is this going to happen every time it is plugged in?

Please give me your thoughts/experience on this.

Thanks, folks!
Merry Christmas!

Me too, all set!

Same thing with my truck. 2017 F350 Lariat 6.7L (4,675 mi.). So truck was in my garage, block heater plugged in for maybe 3 hrs. Cold outside, around 8 to 10 Fahrenheit. I unplugged heater, started truck and backed out of garage. I immediately noticed the CEL. I quickly ran through the panel options and didn't notice anything peculiar. I shut it down and checked vital fluids etc, everything good. I started the truck again, CEL still illuminated. I drove 25-35 mph for maybe 5 miles. Everything seemed ok. I took to the highway and still seemed ok, no limp mode, plenty of power. Drove 60-70 miles then back home. Popped the hood and disconnected both batteries for about 30 hrs? Reconnect and CEL still on. To the dealer 2 days later (warranty). I dont have a code reader (gonna get one).
Technician's report stated a p012f code and TSB 18-2261 applies. I asked to talk to him. He explained: Reprogram pcm and cleared codes. Furthermore, there is a parameter built into original program that monitors the oil and coolant temperature difference. Apparently this parameter was too tight from factory and the TSB broadens the buffer between temps. He also said that if I hadn't used the block heater the CEL most likely wouldn't have come on, as temps would have been about the same. Totally made sense to me. Truck has been fine so far, only 100 miles later. I am going to get something to monitor my temps more accurately. Hope this helps you out. Hank
