When I fire up the truck (2017 CCSB 6.2l 4WD) everything's pretty quiet but when the idle settles down from warming up I'm getting a loud whistle or hissing from the dash. It's not really coming from the vents, it's almost directly behind the speedo and tach display.
As I drive it doesn't really get any louder but does fluctuate very slightly with rpm changes. It's so loud now anyone driving with me hears it. They'll say your AC vents are really loud, but the air isn't on. It's kinda like when we were kids and we'd install our own cassette decks and we'd get the ground wrong and you'd get that noise from the radio coming into the car or truck.
Also, it dosent change when I apply brakes, slow down, or at idle.
Maybe a vacuum leak? Maybe something touching the steering shaft and resonating? driving 10 mph through the parking lot or 75 on highway...still hissing at me.
Trying get some ideas before I go to dealer....they hate it when we say "I got this weird noise"....hehe.
I believe mine does the same thing. 2017 6.2L 4WD. I noticed mine only when idling slowly along (first noticed it on a joy ride through a state park recently). To me it sounds like a whistle noise related to the air intake. I do not notice it getting louder or worse if engine RPM increases or sitting in park idling. Only when moving slowly at low RPM. I never hear it during "normal" driving conditions.
I'm not going to worry too much about it at this point unless it gets worse. However, if you do find the source / resolution please post an update as I may want to resolve this in the future.
I also have this issue on my '17 CCSB 6.2 3K miles. It definitely gets more pronounced as you gain speed. Give the truck a little gas and it goes away for a second, but eventually comes back on. It sounds like a a/c fan with a noisy bearing. But its not because it still happens with the a/c off. Its not an under hood noise. I never noticed it when I first got the truck. Would love to get that resolved because other than that, the truck is extremely quiet.
First - Merry Christmas...!!!! Up early getting everything ready for the family.
Quick update...while idling at a stop yesterday, whistling/hissing was going on, a usual. For grins I turned the steering wheel fully to the right - the hissing stopped. I sat there a moment wondering now if it's a steering pump issue or the brake booster that sits right at the spot the hissing is from the dash.
I'll do a few more 'scientific' tests today as we'll be driving some...stay tuned.
Mine does this too. 2017 CCSB 6.2 4x4. More pronounced when the outside temp is somewhat cold. And just like the previous reply, the sound comes and goes with turning of the steering wheel. I have no idea what it could be. I've crawled under the hood with the engine idling and cannot seem to figure out exactly where it's coming from. That being said, these engines seem to give off quite a few hissing noises at idle.
After reading through these replies, I went out and tried turning the wheel and sure enough, the sound goes away as soon as you start to turn the wheel.
I can take it to the dealer, but thought I'd check on here to see if this is normal or not.
I have a 6.7 F350 DRW and noticed the same thing right away. No clue what it is but doesn't seem to cause any problem!s. More of an annoyance than anything else.
No updates from me on this topic yet. Next trip to dealer I'll ask the service manager....I'm sure the noise will stop once he's in the truck as we drive it for evidence.
When my truck is still cold, I’ve noticed a whistle from under the hood or dash. I believe I have hydroboost brakes, so it can’t be a vacuum brake booster on my truck. I thought it may be turbo noise?
I noticed mine does this as well (2017 F250 6.2) and moving the steering wheel also quiets it. Interested to see if anyone gets a fix or if this is "normal". I find it to be pretty annoying if it's really quiet in the truck.
I took it by the local Ford service department and one of the techs got into the driver's seat for a listen. He said he's never heard that before, but in his opinion it is the sound of the hydraulic fluid circulating in the pump and transmitting up the aluminum steering shaft. He said these trucks are so quiet inside, you can hear noises that were masked before on older models. Whether he's right or not, I'm not sure. But it definitely seems tied to the steering, and that is just a conventional hydraulic steering system. The fluid level is fine and everything operates as it should. You can't hear this particular sound on my truck from under the hood. So unless it starts to get severely worse or I notice something wrong with my steering, I'll just ignore it.
Just wondering if anyone has an update on this? My 2019 DRW F-350 Plat 6.7 is doing it as well. Dealer at first thought it was the transmission pump and pulled the trans... Of course, it did not solve the problem. (But may have solved an unrelated problem, so... silver lining???)
Anyways, I was finally able to pin it down to something steering related as well, just as described above. Would like to know if there is a solution on this.
