Rpm

Hey guys I have a few questions for you . I was going to make separate posts but wth It probably doesn’t matter .I read somewhere that the FE are low rpm engines . What range of rpm is getting to high for it to be continuously running at ? I’m 17 and my 68 Ford 250 is my first vehicle so I’m not very familiar with the rpms on my truck vs. other vehicles . My second question was about a utube video I watched a week ago . It was about double clutching . I had never heard of it before that . The video said it will give your transmission a longer life . Does anyone know if it’s true ? And if it’s actually worth creating a habit to double clutch ? Also does anyone know where I can buy the last section of E-brake cables (the part that’s goes into the wheel) for my truck it’s a 3/4 longbed with 4wd I’m not sure what they look like since they werent there when I bought the truck . Pretty sure I found the right ones on eBay for $94 . Anyone know where I can get them cheaper ? Or know if I can use the 2wd ones? I live up on the side of a mountain and it’s not a big deal not having them till I try to find a level spot to leave my truck in neutral and warm it up in the mornings or find a level spot to turn the hubs and take it out of 4wd without shutting it off . Thanks

They run in the same RPM range as most big V8s. Up to 5,000 rpm or so. There isn't a "solid" top speed.

Double clutching is a technique used on non-synchronized transmissions. It is not necessary on your truck, and will put more wear on the clutch components, while accomplishing nothing.

Cables, I'm not sure. Sounds like you're on the right track though. I don't see why 2 or 4 wheel drive would make a difference, everything in the back is the same.

Thanks for the reply 351 Cleveland
I’m glad to hear I’m safe driving it at the rpms I have been . And that I don’t need to learn double clutching , I tried it today on my way home and I didnt notice any difference anyway . I asked about the cables because the ones I found for $94 on eBay say 4wd , but at Napa the 2wd ones are somewhere around $25 each or for the set(I can’t remember which ) So I thought mabey there is something different between the two because the price difference

X2 on what 351 Cleveland said for your engine and tranny. The pickup FE's ran out of breath around 5000 so no point in running them higher anyway. Properly built with aftermarket parts will let them run 6000...even higher with very carefully chosen parts.

E brake cable. Left side only, for some reason. Call them and see if they can hook you up with both sides. https://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_t...1967-1969.html

Hate to do it, but here's LMC. Again, call them and ask just to be sure: Truck Parts and Truck Accessories

Post a pic of your truck.

Thanks , I’m nowhere close to 5000rpm . I’m more like 3000 on the highway. I thought I’d check after reading that they are built as low rpm engines

Thanks coastal68 I’ll give macs a call. I’ve tried lmc , might try them again . Ive had them tell me they don’t have it and then I call up a month later and get a different person who says they do

I’ll post a pic as soon as I can. Have to find just the right one
And who knows how long it will take me to figure out how post a pic lol took me like 30 to figure out to post questions

At what speed? And what size tires do you have? That is a bit high for cruising, but still acceptable.

I'm assuming you have an F250 then? Which means you probably have 4.10 gears from the sound of it.

I'd be looking for some 35" tires to help with that

Yes it’s a 250 and if I remember right the guy I bought it from said the gears are 4.10.
I plan on new tires hopefully next summer . I’m glad you brought that point up since I would definitely not of been buying tires with my rpms in mind. I would of went in and asked for the biggest widest ones they could fit in there lol

Last summer I installed an Edelbrock intake and 4barrel carb . Could that make rpms be a bit higher ?

No. Rpm is a solid ratio determined by gearing, speed, and tire size. Nothing else affects it. And it's always constant.

RPM stands for Revolutions Per Minute. It is the speed of the engine crankshaft.

That carb and intake added power, but it did not affect RPM.

Ok good to know . I was aware of what rpm stands for , but not that it was constant . I would of thought that changing stuff out on my engine would always be changing up rpms . Thanks !
