John Deere 110

I got an email from someone the other day about a John Deere 110 that he has for sale. It is a 1974 model with a Tecumseh HH100 10hp engine (it's supposed to be a Kohler, but that's beside the point) and he says it runs good and the drivetrain/clutch is tight. It has a manual lift. He's asking $200. I think it's a heck of a deal, myself. But I know there are some more experienced people on here that could give me an opinion about it. I do know that the 110 has a 4spd transmission; I don't know if it has the variator drive (where you can gear it down real low for plowing) though. But anyway, the soonest I can go look at it is next weekend and I just want to get some opinions before I ride 2 hrs. one way to look at it (and burn a tank of gas).

By the way, I have done some research at the Weekend Freedom Machines website on this.

What do you plan on doing with it and how big is your yard/lawn?

I had an 11hp/38in. cut mower and it had a hard time keeping up if we were getting good rains followed by sunshine. I would have to ride the clutch in the lowest gear to let the mower keep up. It finally blew up last fall.

I've got a new 15.5hp/42 in. that can walk through anything now.

A John Deere 110 is a big mower. It's the first garden tractor John Deere made. This one, however is the last year they were made, 1974, so that would mean that all of the problems should be worked out of it. Also it's not like the newer cheap mowers that use a vertical shaft engine. This uses a horizontal shaft engine, which means more torque gets transferred to the rear wheels than the vertical type.

Well, it's lookin better for me.....I just sold 3 Murray pushmowers for $50, so I have more room and money....and he says he's gonna be out of town til late next week, so that means he won't be able to advertise to anyone else, so I think I got a pretty good shot at getting it.

I really don't think you can go wrong with getting a john deere lawn tractor - they're simply the best. Many lawn tractors will use cheap bushings where john deer will use sealed bearings etc - just MUCH higher quality than your wall mart variety - or many others for that matter. We have a John Deere 111 that we've had for about 21 years already! Every year it has seen severe service - VERY dusty conditions, we even would move barley in the Quonset hut to the auger with the snow blower attachment! As far as I can remember we've only replaced bearings on the mower deck once, and a couple fuel pumps and a carburetor as well - not bad for 21 years of extreme service! Unfortunately I think the motor just gave up the ghost last week... we'll see what can be done.. nonetheless - I don't think you'll find many other brands holding up to that kind of abuse in the least!!

Yeah, I already have a 1999 John Deere GT-235, and it's a BIG step up from the old Montgomery Wards mower we used to have.

If the 110 is in good shape I would buy it. You said that it is one of the last so that means it would have the more square fenders. The 110's with round fenders are collector items, but I would even take one like you are talking about.
