Well I got my first oil change light earlier than expected (4100 Miles). I was going to change at 5,000 anyway, but now I’m dropping it at dealer today for this, alignment that has been a little off since factory, and the fuel tank TSB. 26.5 gallons is the most I’ve ever been able to put in. We will see how it goes!
If you tow often and moderate to heavy loads, 4-5k miles is a normal/acceptable range. Just changed mine yesterday: Valvoline 5W-40 full synthetic. The interval is very dependent on the engine load and driving habits.
I tow 95% of my mileage. My last oil change; I'm now at 10K miles with no change oil light yet. I think the long distance vs. short multiple trips has a lot to do with the algorithm the change light uses.
My oil change was with Mobil1 10w40 diesel truck oil. I will change it anyways prior to the '18 towing season, light on or not.
Gas or Diesel? Way too early for the light to come on. I would break down the filter to check for contaminants. i.e. metal pieces. This is not normal.
Jack
It's Diesel. I would agree with you except I know two other guys who's first oil change lights came on in the 5-6k mile range. At the same time there are those here who have almost 10k miles and say it hasn't come on.
I got the oil change required light twice. Once with the conventional Motorcraft 15W40 from the factory, first ol change, got it at 6800. I switched to synthetic the last 3 oil changes and I didn't get the notification until this last time at 9000 miles (this had some towing miles on after that oil change). I have never seen the Change oil soon notification.
No need to break down the filter. It was the factory oil.
My thought is run synthetic, you wont see that light as often.
