I just purchased a 1996 F250 HD 4x4 super cab, 7.3 PSD, w/204,000 miles. I also just discovered this forum and it is great. I have been the owner of a 2003 F150 gas engine(great truck) but this is my first diesel.
I have been reading several threads about fuel leaks because mine has one, on top and dripping down the back of the motor. When time permits I will try to see exactly where it’s leaking. It also has a oil leak at the oil filter.
Otherwise it seems like a good truck.
I would take any advice on general maintenance i.e coolant type, engine oil, and areas that need special attention.

Thanks,
Glenn

Use Fleet Charge concentrated coolant, Rotella or Schaeffer's like I do and the stickies at the top of the page is full of information. From one Glenn to another, welcome!

I appreciate it. I had planned on keeping it stock, I’m not a very skilled mechanic. I can do general maintenance and minor repairs,... modifications not so much. I will use it to tow a John Deere tractor around and firewood hauling.
I have already learned quite a bit just by reading through various threads. A wealth of knowledge here.
I’ll have some specifics when I get into the fuel leak issue, no doubt.

Glenn.

mine leaked up there and was from pump to fuel bowl hose but I replaced the pump and rebuilt the fuel bowl for piece of mind. Bought all parts from riffraff.

some info I have collected on here

Thanks for the information, I had something weird happen today, started it up to check for fuel leak and after turning the switch off, the starter engaged, turning the motor but would not stop turning it over even with the key off and passenger side battery cable removed. Ever seen that happen? Not sure where to begin.

I saw some older posts that indicated batteries need replacing, as low voltage could cause it. Is the starter relay on the passenger wheel well? It looks like it has been replaced before.

I Talked to the previous owner who said he replaced the starter and relay recently. I charged the batteries and it started without any problems. It looks like I will be replacing the batteries.
