I am about to get an F250. Since I didn't decide to go this route until recently, I have been waiting a little while for the prices to come down some on the 2017 models before pulling the trigger. I am looking to get a fairly loaded up Lariat with all the technology options (ultimate package, trailer cameras, BLIS, LED headlights, etc.). I have leased every car I've owed for the last 15 years so the sales price, etc, didn't mean as much as they do in a purchase. This time I will be buying so its a different approach to value.
Option 1: I can get locate a 2017 with what I want on it but it will almost surely have options I don't want in order to get the combo I am seeking. That being said, I can get the truck for $10K +/- off the MSRP. Most of the ones I've found with my options have an MSRP of $73,000 or so since they were ordered with a few things I don't want (like the chrome package).
Option 2: I can order a 2018 exactly like I want it (or maybe find one in the works). This would allow me to put only what I want on the truck making for a lower MSRP (right around $70,000) but not getting as big of a discount. I have done some searching and there are some dealers that are knocking some decent money off 2018's as well as 2017's.
Questions: So if prices are equal because of the lower MSRP on the 2018 when compared to a discounted 2017, should I opt for the 2018? At what point do you think a year older model becomes irrelevant (or relevant or that matter)? So how much more is it worth to have a 2018 over a 2017 down the road?
Dollar for dollar, go with the 2018. On a 2017, you're almost a year old already with 2018 right around the corner. Even though mileage plays a role in re-sale, MY does as well. The discounts on a 2017 would have to outweigh the instant depreciation IMO. That said, if you can swing a deal on a 2017 off the lot and get the truck right away...there's something to be said for that. Only factor that would be a do or die for me on 2018 vs 2017 would be if I was leasing. I'd go 2018 to get the higher residual.
For me it all comes down to $$$. If you can get a 17 with what you want on it and it’s not so loaded down with other options that it eats up all the rebates I’d go that way. If not go the 18 route and save a buck.
All the 17’s I found with the options I wanted had so much extra fluff on them that it added up to more than the current rebates. Ended up ordering an 18 for substantially less.

That's what I'm finding it seems like. It seems all of the Lariat ultimate package 2017's I find are missing either the LED lights or the trailer camera system. They don't ever seem have both and especially not in a color I want (or missing something else I want). Those 2017 I do find with the things I really want it pushes the MSRP to around $73,000. That ends up about $3000 or more higher than a 2018 with exactly like I want it, in the color I want. Discounts on 2017's can be between $9k and $12k depending on the dealer and how far I am willing to drive to make the deal. I have seen some dealers with 2018's discounted by almost $8k on vehicles they have (or are coming in). I don't know if they'll have that discount on an ordered truck but I am going to check on it.
EDIT: So basically, it will likely be about $2000 +/- more to have a 2018 with exactly what I want with none of the extras I don't want in a 2017.
I’ve had my current 04 for 14 years. It’s likely I’ll have the new one for the same. If you’re like me and tend to keep them a long time, I think it’s worth $2k to drive exactly what you want for the next 10 to 15 years of your life.
I did the build and price for the 2018 with the exact same specs as my 2017KR,. And it was close to 900.00 more expensive. Take that into consideration as well.
2017 is the best bet, if you can find the options you want.

That's what I did at the time with my 17 as I definitely wanted the 4:30 gears and the 5th wheel prep. Only regret is not ordering the full 360 camera package vs just the high mounted bed camera (although that alone will help in hooking up the 5th wheel.
Keep in mind that 17's have about a year and half run. I just bought a new '17 that was just built in November. If i went to sell it in a month, it would be compared to trucks that a year and half old. I had my reasons to buy it but financially it would have probably made more sense to order and '18 for a couple of thousand more at most if I were to sell it in the next couple of years.
