I purchased a new F250 a couple weeks ago and the tailgate step is really hard to pull out. The manual says that the step should pop out when the button is pushed but mine doesn't. I'm going to say it takes at least 25 pounds of force to pull out the step, which is hard to do with your fingernails. Has anyone else experienced this?
Might I suggest you open it the spray the handle mechanism w/ Liquid Wrench lithium spray. Raise/extend the handle several times after spraying to fully distribute the lube. Give the 2 hinges on either side of the tailgate a shot as well. Believe you'll find it works way mo' betta afterwards.
Take it to the dealer. Mine was replaced a few weeks ago. I took it in the first time and they lubricated the snot out of it (making it quite messy) but that only made it pop out 50% of time. For round two they replaced the entire mechanism. It works good now.
DO NOT lubricate it.........in time it will become a dirt magnet, then you will really have a hard time opening it. Do like HRTKD posted......take it in and get it fixed right.

Thank you all for the feedback. I have made an appointment to get it inspected at the dealership.
i'm in the middle of this after three trips to the dealer. Now they are going to replace the entire mechanism. I think I figured what's causing it: the right side bracket on the tailgate is too far out. If you move it in about 1/8" it works fine. It will make the width of the brackets the same out width of the rods. I'm making them replace it anyway since they jerked me around and gouged up the plastic.
