I recently bought my '93 F250 with non-turbo 7.3 IDI. After reading a lot of threads on the glow plug system, I am scratching my head as to what is wrong with mine. Supposedly the PO had the GP's and controller replaced within the last couple of years.
In near-freezing temps, the first cycle has the WTS light on for about 4-5 seconds, then the relay starts "clicking" which I assume is to keep the plugs hot. So I hit the key and it won't start (I have priming problems too). Turn off the key and back on for another cycle, and the light blinks briefly and the clicking starts right away.
My understanding is that each time you turn the key off and back on that a new cycle should start (so at least several seconds). Is this right?
I'm going to check the resistance of each glow plug and expect that one (or two) may be bad. Does this also agree with the symptoms I'm experiencing?
sounds to me like you need glow plugs because they did not put motorcraft ZD-9 plugs in it.
other than that, it sounds like the controller is working as best it can with the bad glow plugs.
That was my guess too... I had already ordered a set of original Motorcraft ZD-9's from that auction site for $65 shipped. Out of town for a week but once I get back I will remove and inspect whatever cheap ones the previous mechanic installed... thanks.
