What is this thing?

I bought this 94 f150 4.9 automatic yesterday. I have been told what this is but I would like for someone to identify it and tell me what it really is and why it is there. One hose goes to the PVC valve. Sandy

Where does the other hose go to? Since you say pcv, it might be a cup for oil vapor to collect in the cup before it goes into the intake and burned off.

That is an air/oil separator. With all those mechanical bits inside an engine smashing around in an oil bath a lot of oil mist is generated and that gets sucked out through the PCV valve and back into the engine where it is burned and makes a general mess of the intake... especially when mixed with sooty exhaust recirculation gases. That is an aftermarket addition but it's a pretty good idea too IMO.

Water softener. Better suds for laundry in hard water areas.

That's what I was told. Any maintenance involved with it that I should do? Thank you Sandy

Looks like an oil catch can. Trying to keep oil in the PCV from entering the intake and gumming stuff up.

Occasionally it will need to be emptied, and the media may degrade and need replacement.

Ok Thank you. And I assume the media is the bowl? Sandy

I believe there should be foam or paper or some other sort of media to function as a filter to keep the oil from being sucked into the return line.

It might just be a simple separator, like you have on an air line in the garage. Just unscrew the bowl and dump out the oil. Maybe a simple wash out too?

This is what I'm using in my truck. Yea, just dump the oil each change.

Does the bowl just unscrew or is there a different way? Thanks Sandy

I have a different brand/model; so can't comment on your setup. But yes, the bowl simply unscrews on my separator.
