They are a pointless exercise in global control that failed years ago, and is still failing. The amount of pointless requirements nations have to abide by, on order of that bunch of monkeys is amazing. The last 12 years of my military service was as the beck and call of those folk, and I had enough of them in the first week. The best possible thing that could ever happen, would be the disbanding of that particular attempt at world government - the principle is good, however mankind is incapable of implementing such principals honestly. (I know we could, but then we don't get the chance)

By 'We' I mean of course, the noble bretheren of the order of FTE.....
You don't have to go to far back to see why the UN doesn't seem to be effective. Look at the pre-war negotiations between the United States and the UN regarding the US invading Iraq. We were willing to go in with or without their approval.
UN stands for Un Necessary.
Look, the United States is the most powerful country on earth, to the enormous benefit of hundreds of countries all over the world. Now we have the UN trying to flout itself as the "check and balance" for our power. Wait a second...your headquarters are in our country, we contribute 2 to 1 over any other member country, and your organization blatantly stands in the way of U.S. interests for the sake of your own? Why the are we still putting up with this crap? If the United States left the UN, all you would have left is an underfunded organization of whining, powerless countries, with ZERO political clout and even less military clout, and it would open up several thousand square feet of Manhattan office space. The US should pull out and start another organization, selecting a few member nations that operate under a set of rules that benefits the U.S., because in the end, what's good for the United States is good for all of our allies and trading partners.

The UN is a step in the right direction - but it is a "Talk Table".
As such, it presents a floor where various interests can persuade and dissuade eachother. But unfortunately - it is also possible to "TALK THE TALK" while failing in entirety to "WALK THE WALK", as we have seen many times.
The UN units are capable of entering areas where there is hostile fire taking place and deliver aid, unless they die in the attempt...
*shrugs*
What's new in that?
A noble idea, and at least the idea is out there on a world scale, but nevertheless largely ineffective. And in fact obstructive at times, but it was intended to be. A huge monument to the concept "Think Before You Act".
In recent times however - it has seemed (to me at least) to represent the concept "DON'T THINK!!! DON'T ACT!!!"
And so in the aftermath of 9-11 it appears to have been rendered entirely useless...
What the heck, we TRIED...

The UN is no longer a usefull organization. The became that when they refused to enforce their own resolutions. We were right in going in with out UN approval, because those bunch of pansy's would never have done anything.
You know what? When I was doing Maritime Interdiction Operations in the gulf, I didn't see anybody but American Ships out their helping search freighters going into and out of Iraq.
The U.N. is the only place that the Two-Bit Dictators and the Camei Salesmaen can feel that they are "World Powers". To me it has become an exercise in futility to try and get them to pass any resolution and then back it up. I think we should remove ourselves from the U.N. and let the third world fend or itself.
The UN is a rediculous organization. We have always paid most of the cost for whatever has been done through them, but they still want EQUAL power. Now, in no way is some tiny little country in Africa or the " muddle east" is equal to us nor should they have an equal say on matters.
I think a nice volcanic island somewhere in the Pacific, would be a great place for them. The UN seems to want global control with a single leader. No way in heck is that gonna happen...at least in my lifetime...I hope.
Whether you like it or not the UN has some value.......
Only as a forum for Nations to get together and argue, agree, disagree, and make some minor resolutions.
But Power, it should not have any real power. No military power at all. Just a forum
