The UN???

We were about as alone as a country can get. We footed all the bills, provided the bulk of the troops, equipment and lives. Unless, of course, you consider England and Australia major military and industial powers. They're about one step above Bulgaria and other 'coalition' members.

After the US telling all other UN powers they were fools for not approving our invasion and occupation of Iraq, I find it difficult to imagine Powell dictating terms to those countries for financial and military assistance. Most have already publically told us no as long as we insist on military and civilian control.

You are either alone or not alone. Saying you are about as alone as you can get with others there is like being "kinda pregnant."

I'm not arguing the fact that Powell is asking for help. I don't think he's "dictating terms." I never said he was. I also don't think he's begging. Why does everything have to be an exaggeration?

The UN???

Alone? What about U.N. Security Council Resolution 1441? All 15 council members voted for the resolution which warned Iraq that "it will face serious consequences" if it continues to violate its obligations as spelled out in the resolution.

Security Council Tightens Iraqi Disarmament Regime

Just what does the UN feel serious consequences are? All bark and no bite. How can they enforce their Resolutions if they do not have the will?

The UN???

If someone came to me with a major course of action I refused to support, called me foolish, short-sighted, went ahead and did it, failed, then came back to me for assistance on it, I'd think deep humility and some dignified begging would be a good start. We're talking about a lot of money and military exposure not in the budgets of most of those countries. The ruling parties would then have to pacify their citizenry, assure them particiption would not attract the reactions of Muslim extremists (impossible with US control of military and civilian activities) and decide when. Exaggeration? I don't think so.

I agree to your definition, not alone, but with a 'coalition'. The coalition strength speaks for itself.

I never said that we weren't asking for help but I seriously doubt we're begging anyone for anything. Also we were not alone. That was the only point I was making. So no your post was not "terribly accurate." It was a combination of speculation about what Colin powell does behind closed doors and a blatant false statement about us being "alone." Re-read it. You made those statements as facts and they are not.
RRMike,

You obviously feel pretty strongly about this personally, and I don't want to turn it into a personal battle.

I have not been behind closed doors anymore than you have, but if it walks like a duck, talks like a ducks, and swims like a duck, it must be a duck. Powell isn't going to these countries and telling them what to do, he is asking them, rather humbly, to help the US in Iraq. Whether you call that begging or not is a matter of your perspective.

You had a coalition, you the Brits, the Aussies and handful of other insignificant hangers on. So alone is not 100% accurate, but I'd say it was a pretty small minority of countries. Where are the rest of the coalition members now?

You're splitting hairs on details and missing the forest for the trees IMHO.

I'm not missing the forest Waxy. I haven't one time disputed that we are asking for help. I just think you're being especially inflamatory with the way you word things.

My origonal post to you about being melodramatic was mostly in jest. I don't want to make this personal either so I'll let it die now. We'll just have to wait and see how things turn out and let history decide.

The UN???

The UN is the first major successful step on the road to a world superstate. Political Affairs, the communist's party journal said in april, 1945:

"Great popular support and enthusiam fot the United Nations should be built up, well organized and fully articulate. But it is also necessary to do more than that. The opposition must be rendered so impotent that it will be unable to gather any sigificant support in the Senate against the United Nations Charter and the treaties which will follow."

The UN???

There is a quote by Abraham Maslow that I always keep in mind. It reads "When the only tool you own is a hammer, every problem begins to resemble a nail"

I would like to change it to "When you outlook on life depends on conspiracy theories, then everything begins to resemble a conspiracy".

I'll bet a couple of you anti-war guys believe we never landed on the moon right?

A democracy is mob rule. Jesus was killed by a democracy.

"It has been said that Democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

--Winston Churchill

(He had said several variations of this statement. Don't crucify me if this not the version you know and love.)

Mike W,

You don't like socialism, and you don't like democracy, and you're very concerned about a single world government of freemasons.

What would you propose, Mike W for dictator?
