Quick easy question! I went to the part store to get two trans filters. One for my 1998 ford f250 light duty 5.4. (Which I thought was an e40d) 2 wheel drive. And one for my f350 dually v10 4x4. However they said the only option for my f250 was a 4r100 not the E40d. My id tag is labeled with an "E". My question is, is the filter the same for an E40d and a 4r100 2 wheel drive tranny. I know the 4x4 had deeper pick ups but I feel like the "B" team (late night/weekend works) may have sold me the wrong filter. Thanks!
You're right on the cusp of a couple changes. I'm not certain of exactly what was built in the 1998 models. Both E4OD and 4R100 had the E code on the ID tag.
E4OD had both deep and shallow pans. 4R100 only used the shallow pan on the Lightning trucks as I remember it.
Your V10 truck will have a deep pan. Is the E4OD pan the same depth as the V10? You could measure it without taking either pan off.
Well one filter the v10 4x4 filter has a different part number. Than the 250ld I can run out and look. I just don't wanna drain everything and have the wrong filter. As long as the E40d 2x4 has the same filter as the 4r100 2x4 i should be good right?
One way I know of to tell for sure is to drop the pan and filter and look at it.
I am pretty sure that 98 is a 4R100. Every 97-03 of that body style I have looked up the VIN on with the larger transmission (not 4R70W) has been labeled "E4OD(4R100)" up through model year 2003.

Over the weekend i flushed both trucks and changed the filters. The filter on my dually was incorrect go figure. I spent the better part of a hour trying to figure out why it had the short inlet. Eventually I put the new one with the long inlet in and all is well. My f250 had the right filter and went seamlessly. All is well and shifting goooooood. Thanks you guys.
