P02D5 - Cylinder 5 Fuel Injector
#16
More follow up notes, I'm sure everyone is tired of this returning to their active feed.
I took it to a local diesel shop this time since it's out of warranty. Their focus are diesel engines and fuel systems anyways.
When monitoring the injectors, injector 5 was definitely under performing. I haven't noticed it but it was idling slightly rougher all this time as well until the new injector was in.
In fact, 6 and 7 are a slightly out of spec when under a load as well but the tech and I discussed and we both agreed not to replace those until they get worse. In that case, I'll replace #8 as well.
It could be 5,000 miles, it could be 100,000 miles. 1-4, 8 are fine and watching the line graph history, I could see where 6-7 are slightly lower with the line peaks but not bad. Five was easy to see something was wrong.
The excessive smoke was the DEF injector. Replaced the DEF injector and that completely solved the problem even with active regeneration. The tech was able to get it to smoke normally as well where as I only noticed it during active regeneration.
I had been assuming the extra DEF (it would dry on the exhaust tips) was because the injector was over fueling causing the SCR system to over inject DEF but was clearly incorrect since I can't argue with the facts of troubleshooting and new parts fixing the issue.
Tech noticed my upper radiator hose was leaking and had been because there was coolant/residue in the valley and to the oil pan. I had not noticed that so that has been replaced as well. Primary coolant system needed a gallon.
Wastegate solenoid and vacuum assembly lines related to that replaced. It's been buzzing/vibrating for 30,000 miles but decided to replace it to see if that would help with the sporadic P132B.
I think that's everything. Did not do a compression test. Truck is running good again but my bank account now has issues!
Have a good weekend.
