A friend of mine just replaced the exhaust on his F-150 and primed/painted it black prior to the install. It turned out pretty sharp.
Once I go through this tank of DEF I plan on replacing the exhaust and am thinking of painting it as well. Not just for looks, but to reduce the temperatures coming of the pipes where it bends near my airbags.
My question is which primer and paint. He used Rustoleum High temp primer and paint, but even after 3 coats it still scratches very easily. That's how thin the paint is.
Does anyone know of any other affordable paints or coatings out there?
I've used High heat grill paint. It's more of a flat black, but after you drive in the rain a couple times, looks like everything else under the truck.
If you want to do it right, you want to do a ceramic paint like Cerakote. I've used it on guns, but I have some moto buddies that have had it on their exhaust for years and years without a single scratch. Its tough stuff.
For the exhaust near the air bags look at Heatshield Products. They make a number of items that could be used in that area. I used their stuff to insulate brake lines that were a little too close to a set of headers I put on.
For painting the exhaust I've used VHTl. I'm not sure it was worth the effort. It's a lot easier to be thorough if you paint the exhaust when it is off the truck. Unless the paint has been properly cured it isn't very stable.
I had my last truck done, its called Ceramic Coating. You can get it done at a powder coating shop. My new exhaust is at the shop right now getting coated as well. You can get Rustoleum high heat grill paint and touch up any scratches that occur and it will match pretty perfect.
Please excuse the ignorance but... the portion of the exhaust you are talking about painting isn't visible unless under the truck is it?
What are the issues with exhaust causes the airbags?
The only real portion of the exhaust you'd see is after the rear axle, but for me if I'm going to paint the exhaust, I'm going to do the whole thing.
The issue with the airbag is that the airbag is made out of some type of rubber compound if I had to guess. Prolonged exposure to a heat source is probably not a good idea.

I gotcha. I’m an attention to detail guy. If you’re going to paint any portion of the exhaust, it makes sense to paint the whole thing. I like to think the airbags should never have a problem but I can certainly see the potential issue. If you’re down there painting anyway, may as well take the extra step.
