Front drive shaft "timing"

Is there only one way to reassemble the front stub shafts for TTB on the right hand side or can you get them off a few splines? I took them apart to do some spindle work and now it doesn't revolve smoothly. It kinda binds when turning. How do you set it up? Thanks in advance

I do not believe it is keyed meaning the exact orientation does not matter.

Hubs locked or unlocked. Full lock turning is not advised when in 4wd, there isn't quite enough range in the outer U-joint. And the use of 4wd is not advised at all on clear pavement as binding in the drivetrain will occur.

Thanks, I'm pretty well versed in the operation of older 4x4's. (I've owned this bomb for 5 years and a 1976 F250 highboy for 30 years. I liked it so well I had another rust free one shipped to me from out west.) Sorry, my bad. I meant "turning" meaning rotating. While rotating by hand hubs unlocked and transfer case in 2wd, it gets a hard spot to turn then frees up and so on. This started when I disconnected it for ball joint repairs. As for the timing, it has to matter as u-joints speed up and slow down as they rotate. Try welding a u-joint yoke 90 degrees off on a drive shaft. The harmonics will cause a wobble. After looking at some diagrams, I believe I've found out how it is timed. The u-joints have to be parallel. The same as a solid drive shaft would be. I'll find out tomorrow.

Yes that makes sense. Also make sure none of the u-joints in the drive axle are stiff, I have managed to make these things run smooth as butter to over 70mph but to do that joints have to be snug but smooth and free to move.. the axles should flop over at the joint under their own weight.

New u-joints and she rolls around with minimum effort again. Nice and smooth.
