It really shouldn't, but some is acceptable. With out 4wd engaged, the hubs should be independent of the axles and the drive shaft should be free from the transmission.

They should rotate freely by hand at the ujoint. Drive shaft should spin free. Also when the truck is rolling the axles shouldn't turn when in 2wd..Side to side play at the ujoint, there will be some but not enough to hit the ball joints..
