FT 391 rebuild install

Hello I'm new here, looking for advice for installation of a rebuilt FT391 in a Forward Control RV. Please let me know any ideas, appreciate it

Any info on engine mount replacement? There is only one. It is square with a 1/2 in stud and fixed on a bracket which is mounted to timing cover beneath crank. has a round rubber piece to secure under frame cross bar with nut.

The flexplate has 4 or 5 metal sheets with holes for torque converter cover studs. The old flexplate's metal sheets are warped and holes torn; any ideas on replacement? The outer/starter ring appears fine.

The water pump for original 391 had an upper mount for mechanical fan. New 391 doesn't have any such upper mount. Would it worth breaking off new pump and gasket to install a rebuilt pump to have the fan the way it was?

Same pic (upper) in your other thread (1967/72 forum), along with a bit of info.

I know Blue Bird manufactures School Buses, so B series could be correct, but it could also be an F series, since the rolling chassis is essentially the same.

Trucks are registered by their specific VIN's. 1961/80 Ford truck VIN's have 11 digits.

If your VIN has 11 digits, post the first 5 digits (example: B60FU).

Great that's the mount on the upper left. Thank you! The transmission uses the mounts on the upper right behind bell housing

Yep, I will have to get back to you with the VIN digits, I know it has a couple.

Will not work, you need FT engine insulators.

1 each: Center front, upper and lower / 2 each: Rear right and left lower / 2 each: Rear right and left upper (see pic).

This. of course...is assuming that the frame is from a Ford truck. Need the VIN to verify.

Once I know for sure it's Ford, will list the Ford part numbers and the sources, their locations/phone numbers. All these insulators are obsolete.

Here's the tag on top of the doghouse. It reads
Assume one of these wil suffice
Front Axle Timken number: FE900HDX24

VIn listed on previous owners registration is FL900HDX24 if that makes any difference.

VIN is not FoMoCo related. FoMoCo VIN has 11 digits, first 5 digits would be either B60FU or F60FU

B = School Bus, or F series. 600 could also be 500 or 700; F = 391 4V FT engine; U = Louisville KY Assembly Plant (pertains to rolling chassis).

Just curious, those metal plates (are shims) typical with Allison automatic - how in the
world did they get destroyed like that?? Engine mounts the front no problem but
the rear, we need to know what transmission. Water pump which is high mount fan
I just got one O'Rielys in stock 'on the shelf'... Here is a 391FT Allison 545
going in my bus......sam

Idiot-operator (my) error..Pulled engine out crooked to get over front bumper framing, forgot a torque converter cover bolt, and now both must be replaced

Transmission is Allison MT40. Engine has an adapter plate with starter mount that houses flexplate and joins to bellhousing.

I have a complete rebuilt FT 391 to install and the water pump doesn't have that high mount fan, unsure if i should replace or an alternative option, maybe electric fan(s)?

Dang. That's a thing of beauty did you have a lift to install as a combo like that? incredible Thank you for sharing

Ah pulling engine crooked, does it every time. I find you really don't need the shims. Shims are for the converter v/s flex plate; If I can explain: put engine in transmission
there should be no gap between converter and flex plate if so add a shim or whatever so
the bellhousing and block and flex plate and converter comes together perfectly then
bolt converter. Rear rubber mounts are not a Ford part they are GM although Ford
has a Ford part no. for those. I think my mind says Google Detroit Diesel Allison mounts. Allison branded Transmatic for Ford Powermatic for Chey (I think) just a name
for venders, bottom line they are Allison whatever the tag says. Myself I would go for
a high mount water pump, that puts the fan up a little don't like electric fans just more
crap to go wrong. Do I have a lift yes but not for this > the engine cradle is blocked up
then the bus is moved back into cradle think of the cradle is a draw then its slid in
its channels and bolted. This pic is only a joke we slid a Flathead in there but
the engine compartment is how the real deal is slid in.......sam

Finally getting back to this project. Your install shots are super informative, familiar but much more organized... who knew a flathead could push a bus.... ha ha ..
My plan is to do similar install - first remove and service mt-40... then join to engine, on cradle/sled made of 2x4s with wheels, and, instead of rolling bus onto blocked engine cradle, roll cradle sled into engine compartment and bolt to frame. I will need to remove the cross bar (anybody got a torch do you think this sounds reasonable??

this is the front engine compartment, need to remove that cross bar.... or shall thou not?

extra mt-40 - i plan to build similar 2x4 mount to include ft391 to slide into engine compartment.

Excellent to have answers to questions... thank you big job!!!
