1999 F350 Super Duty 7.3 Diesel-----Pulled up to stop sign, went down the road about a 1/2mile then a loud knocking noise. drove on home killed the truck. Try starting it but no start just crank. A few days ago it started blowing white smoke. Checked the Glow Plug Relay, We get a reading and the next no reading. Any Ideas
Low fuel or fuel pickup fell off (air in fuel), loose injector, ICP sensor or IPR issue... these are all possibilities for causing loud banging and a no-start without cause for concern over the condition of the block. There are some helpful links in my signature.
If the fuel pickup fell off...all you have to do is make sure your fuel tank is above 1/4 tank. Now that you have air in your system, be aware that once it starts, it is going to run rough. Idlilng won't bleed the air out sufficiently, you have to drive it with hard acceleration as well. The first 5 miles will get most of it, but it won't be smooth until you have done some normal driving for about 40-50 miles.
Check to make sure your Tinnerman nut on the IPR isn't loose or fell off (will be in the valley most likely if it fell off).
As for GPR, that's a cheap replacement for something like $30 (unlike it is on the Excursions or CA Emissions trucks where you have to replace a CPCM at $150 and maybe even the wiring at another $150 kit cost).
Also, check your dipstick. Low oil will cause all sorts of crazy problems, and the fix is simply filling it back up to normal level.
If none of the above is your problem...unscrew the huge wiring harness on the drivers side that rides on the driver's side valve cover. Check to make sure it hasn't rubbed through any of the wires causing them to arc and short on the VC. This happens (ask me how I know).
